Abstract In the recent years, multidimensional numerical simulations with tensor-structured data formats have been recognized as the basic concept for breaking the "curse of dimensionality". Modern applications of tensor methods include the challenging high-dimensional problems of material sciences, bio-science, stochastic modeling, signal processing, machine learning, and data mining, financial mathematics, etc. The guiding principle of the tensor methods is an approximation of multivariate functions and operators with some separation of variables to keep the computational process in a low parametric tensor-structured manifold. Tensors structures had been wildly used as models of data and discussed in the contexts of differential geometry, mechanics, algebraic geometry, data analysis etc. before tensor methods recently have penetrated into numerical computations. On the one hand, the existing tensor representation formats remained to be of a limited use in many high-dimensional problems because of lack of sufficiently reliable and fast software. On the other hand, for moderate dimensional problems (e.g. in "ab-initio" quantum chemistry) as well as for selected model problems of very high dimensions, the application of traditional canonical and Tucker formats in combination with the ideas of multilevel methods has led to the new efficient algorithms. The recent progress in tensor numerical methods is achieved with new representation formats now known as "tensor-train representations" and "hierarchical Tucker representations". Note that the formats themselves could have been picked up earlier in the literature on the modeling of quantum systems. Until 2009 they lived in a closed world of those quantum theory publications and never trespassed the territory of numerical analysis. The tremendous progress during the very recent years shows the new tensor tools in various applications and in the development of these tools and study of their approximation and algebraic properties. This special issue treats tensors as a base for efficient numerical algorithms in various modern applications and with special emphases on the new representation formats.

Abstract We present extensions to ChainQueen, an open source, fully differentiable material point method simulator for soft robotics. Previous work established ChainQueen as a powerful tool for inference, control, and co-design for soft robotics. We detail enhancements to ChainQueen, allowing for more efficient simulation and optimization and expressive co-optimization over material properties and geometric parameters. We package our simulator extensions in an easy-to-use, modular application programming interface (API) with predefined observation models, controllers, actuators, optimizers, and geometric processing tools, making it simple to prototype complex experiments in 50 lines or fewer. We demonstrate the power of our simulator extensions in over nine simulated experiments.

The CADE ATP System Competition (CASC) is the annual evaluation of fully automatic, classical logic Automated Theorem Proving (ATP) systems. CASC-J10 was the twenty-fifth competition in the CASC series. Twenty-four ATP systems and system variants competed in the various competition divisions. This paper presents an outline of the competition design, and a commentated summary of the results.

In this paper we shall introduce a formal system of algorithmic logic which enables us to formulate some problems connected with a retrieval system which provides a comprehensive tool in automated theorem proving of theorems consisting of programs, procedures and functions. The procedures and functions may occur in considered theorems while the program of the above mentioned system is being executed. We can get an answer whether some relations defined by programs hold and we can prove functional equations in a dynamic way by looking for a special set of axioms /assumptions/ during the execution of system. We formulate RS-algorithm which enables us to construct the set of axioms for proving some properties of functions and relations defined by programs. By RS-algorithm we get the dynamic process of proving functional equations and we can answer the question whether some relations defined by programs hold. It enables us to solve some problems concerning the correctness of programs. This system can be used for giving an expert appraisement. We shall provide the major structures and a sketch of an implementation of the above formal system.
