Abstract Caffeine and coumarin are organic compounds of plant origin, which have biological activity and have found wide application in medicine, pharmaceutical, perfumery and food industries. Recovery of caffeine and coumarin from aqueous solutions using liquid-liquid extraction is the most effective method. In the present work the kinetic dependences of caffeine and coumarin in the aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) of PEG 1500 - Na2SO4 - H2O were experimentally obtained. It was established that equilibrium in the system is achieved after 17 minutes for caffeine and after 12 minutes for coumarin. The effect of ultrasound on the extraction rate of caffeine and coumarin in an aqueous two-phase system was also studied.

From analytical to commercial scale, aqueous two-phase systems have their application in the purification, characterization and study of biomaterials. In order to improve the selectivity of the systems, the biospecific affinity ligands were introduced. In the affinity partitioning aqueous two-phase system, have many enzymes been purified. This review discusses the partitioning of some enzymes in the affinity aqueous two-phase systems in regard to the different ligands, including reactive dyes, metal ions and other ligands. Some integration of aqueous two-phase system with other techniques for more effective purification of enzymes are also presented.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of the air water toluene three-phase system in a spray extraction column at 20 °C were examined. The average and local hold-up data of the dispersed phase were determined in dependence on the flow rates of the continuous, dispersed and gaseous phases. The average gas phase hold-up was also measured and analyzed. A comparison was made of the hydrodynamic characteristics of the two-phase (water - toluene) and three-phase (air - water - toluene) systems.
