Abstract Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia is a benign intravascular process thought to arise from an organizing thrombus. The lesion may present clinically as an abnormal mass and, depending on the location, may be confused with benign or malignant neoplasms. It has been described in a variety of locations. Involvement of the renal vein by papillary endothelial hyperplasia is extremely rare, with only 4 cases reported in the literature. We describe 2 additional cases. In both cases, the radiologic examination revealed a well-circumscribed mass in the hilar region of the kidney, which was considered to be a renal neoplasm. Nephrectomy specimen in each case revealed characteristic features of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia. It is suggested that intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia should be included in the differential diagnosis of a hilar renal mass.

SummaryA 13-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with weight loss and azotemia. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a large cystic spaceoccupying lesion with multiple septae in the left kidney. A core needle biopsy yielded a renal cystadenoma originating from the epithelial cells. This report describes the clinical, ultrasonographic and computed tomographic features and the growth progression of a renal cystadenoma. We describe the first attempt to apply the human Bosniak classification to a cat with renal cystic neoplasia to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions. Cystadenoma should be a differential diagnosis in cases of renal cystic space-occupying lesions. Other differentials, imaging features to differentiate benign and malignant lesions and the risk of malignant transformation will be discussed.

A case of a solitary, unilateral, large metastatic renal tumor found 35 years after the detection of primary thyroid carcinoma is presented. Renal metastasis from thyroid carcinoma detected during life is extremely rare, and there may be a long latency period before the appearance of a secondary tumor. The possibility of a secondary tumor should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of renal neoplasms, even when the tumor is a large, unilateral, solitary renal mass.

Giant renal leiomyoma is a rare benign tumour with a prevalently smooth muscular component; its clinical aspect and radiological and histological aspects are described. Renal leiomyoma should always be considered in differential diagnosis of a renal mass and surgical exploration is necessary to obtain the histological evidence.
