Winglet is a tool used to improve the efficiency of aircraft and UAV performance by preventing fluid flow jump from lower surface to upper surface at wingtip. The addition of this winglet resulted in improved lift and reduction of drag force from the aircraft wing or UAV. From Whitcomb's research, it was found that the use of winglet on a full size airplane can increase fuel efficiency by 7%. The research led to the idea of conducting research on fluid flow characteristics on the UAV wing with the Eppler 562 airfoil combined with the whitcomb winglet. This numerical study was conducted using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method based on the advantages of using this simulation that can review the fluid flow in macroscopic way. This study is provide accurate fluid flow visualization results and can improve the performance of the wings when compared with wings without winglet (plain wing). Wing with the Eppler 562 airfoil combined with the whitcomb winglet results reduction in rotating motion that makes velocity components as opposed to lift.

Abstract This paper presents an experimental study of hydrodynamics flow characteristics and particle transport in a test facility. Experimental measurements of fluid flow and particle deposition are studied under isothermal conditions using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) techniques. These non-intrusive optical measurement techniques have been applied in experiment conditions of Reynolds number Re = 5,077 in a 3-inch square channel and 72-inches in total length. The fluid within the channel is air seeded with aerosol droplets while the measurements of particle transport is facilitated using surrogate particles dispersed in the channel flow. Results obtained from the PIV and PTV measurements included the hydrodynamics fluid flow characteristics, and characteristics of particle transports, such as particle velocity, particle diameter distributions and particle concentration profiles. Results from the preliminary test have shown 11.08% deposition of particles. To supplement this experimental work, upstream fluid flow characteristics were provided as boundary conditions for a comparable numerical study.

Hydrothermal characteristics in circular wavy microchannels (CWMCs) with bifurcation plate have been numerically studied and compared with hydrothermal performance of sinusoidal wavy microchannels (SWMCs). Numerical study were carried out considering the Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 100 to 300. It was observed that, as the fluid flows through CWMC, it continuously absorbs heat from the channel leading to decrease in the temperature difference between the channel and the fluid. Hence, heat dissipation along the channel length decreases. To augment the heat dissipation along the fluid flow direction in CWMC, bifurcation plate (BFP) is introduced in the middle of the channel. CWMC with bifurcation plate has shown higher Nusselt number (Nu) with pressure drop penalty. The parametric study on bifurcation plate length was also carried out to minimize the pressure drop penalty and to achieve higher Nu. It is identified that CWMC with bifurcation plate length of 12.5 mm gives higher Nu with pressure drop penalty. Nu is further enhanced by providing slots on bifurcation plate. It is concluded that CWMC with BFP(10 mm) having slots gives the highest Nu than any other designs with pressure drop penalty.

In this study, hydrothermal characteristics in a circular wavy microchannel (CWMC) design under laminar flow conditions with uniform heat flux is numerically studied. Parametric studies in an innovative CWMC design were carried out at various wave amplitudes, wavelengths and aspect ratios. Three dimensional numerical study was performed in the Reynolds number (Re) range from 100 to 300 with uniform heat flux (50 W/cm2) applied at bottom of the channel, treating copper as channel material and water as working fluid. The obtained results were compared to sinusoidal wavy microchannel (SWMC).The results showed that heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics were significantly influenced by wave amplitude, wavelength and aspect ratio. Velocity vectors and contours were presented to understand the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics. Stream-wise local Nusselt number, overall performance factor, span-wise velocity and temperature variation are also presented. It is concluded that CWMC with higher wave amplitude, smaller wave length and smaller aspect ratio gives higher heat transfer augmentation with corresponding pressure drop penalty.

A 3-D numerical study is performed to investigate the effects of periodicity (geometry) on flow of fluid and on flow of solid/fluid suspensions in packing arrangements of fixed beds of spheres. The porosity is fixed at 0.58 and the following packing arrangements are studied: simple cubic, face-centered cubic, hexagonal, rhomboedric hexagonal and tetragonal. Simulations are carried out at Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.1 and 50, and using solid suspensions with different sizes (0.2, 2 and 10 micron) and densities (200 and 2000 kg/m3). The effect of the periodicity on fluid flow characteristics (permeability and inertia parameter) and on the penetration efficiency of solid suspensions within the packed beds is analyzed and quantified.
