Evaluation and Optimization of a Cross-Rib Micro-Channel Heat Sink

This article presents a novel cross-rib micro-channel (MC-CR) heat sink to make fluid self-rotate. For a thermal test chip (TTC) with 100 w/cm2, the cross-ribs micro-channel were compared with the rectangular (MC-R) and horizontal rib micro-channel (MC-HR) heat sinks. The results show that, with the cross-rib micro-channel, the junction temperature of the thermal test chip was 336.49 K, and the pressure drop was 22 kPa. Compared with the rectangular and horizontal ribs heat sink, the cross-rib micro-channel had improvements of 28.6% and 14.3% in cooling capability, but the pressure drop increased by 10.7-fold and 5.5-fold, respectively. Then, the effects of the aspect ratio (λ) of micro-channel in different flow rates were studied. It was found that the aspect ratio and cooling performance were non-linear. To reduce the pressure drop, the inclination (α) and spacing (S) of the cross-ribs were optimized. When α = 30°, S = 0.1 mm, and λ = 4, the pressure drop was reduced from 22 kPa to 4.5 kPa. In addition, the heat dissipation performance of the rectangular, staggered fin (MC-SF), staggered rib (MC-SR) and cross-rib micro-channels were analyzed in the condition of the same pressure drop, MC-CR still has superior heat dissipation performance.

Grinding Performance Integrated Experimental Evaluation on Alumina Ceramics with Leaf-Vein Bionic Grinding Wheel

In order to enhance the grinding performance of alumina ceramic materials, the surface of the grinding wheels are ablated by laser radiation before grinding, and the three types of leaf-vein bionic grinding wheels with different micro-groove pitches are formed to compare the grinding experiments with normal grinding wheels. The grinding forces and surface roughness were gauged and the morphological characteristics of ground workpiece surfaces were studied. The results showed that with the increase of groove pitch, the normal grinding force was reduced by 9.6-63%, while the tangential grinding force is reduced by 8.3-42%. The groove can promote the flow of coolant, accelerate the heat dissipation and chip removal in the grinding area, reduce the damage of the workpiece and the wear of the grinding wheel, so the vein bionic grinding wheel had more tremendous processing advantages. Among the four kinds of grinding wheels, the leaf-vein bionic grinding wheel with groove pitch equal to 8mm obtained the best grinding effect. The vein-shaped groove had a positive impact on the grinding process.

Thermal Percolation Behavior in Thermal Conductivity of Polymer Nanocomposite with Lateral Size of Graphene Nanoplatelet

In this study, the thermal percolation behavior for the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites according to the lateral size of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) was studied. When the amount of GNPs reached the critical concentration, a rapid increase in thermal conductivity and thermal percolation behavior of the nanocomposites were induced by the GNP network. Interestingly, as the size of GNPs increased, higher thermal conductivity and a lower percolation threshold were observed. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite containing 30 wt.% M25 GNP (the largest size) was 8.094 W/m·K, and it was improved by 1518.8% compared to the polymer matrix. These experimentally obtained thermal conductivity results for below and above the critical content were theoretically explained by applying Nan’s model and the percolation model, respectively, in relation to the GNP size. The thermal percolation behavior according to the GNP size identified in this study can provide insight into the design of nanocomposite materials with excellent heat dissipation properties.

Passive concentration dynamics incorporated into the library IB2d, a two-dimensional implementation of the immersed boundary method

In this paper, we present an open-source software library that can be used to numerically simulate the advection and diffusion of a chemical concentration or heat density in a viscous fluid where a moving, elastic boundary drives the fluid and acts as a source or sink. The fully- coupled fluid-structure interaction problem of an elastic boundary in a viscous fluid is solved using Peskin’s immersed boundary method. The addition or removal of the concentration or heat density from the boundary is solved using an immersed boundary-like approach in which the concentration is spread from the immersed boundary to the fluid using a regularized delta function. The concentration or density over time is then described by the advection-diffusion equation and numerically solved. This functionality has been added to our software library, IB2d, which provides an easy-to-use immersed boundary method in two dimensions with full implementations in MATLAB and Python. We provide four examples that illustrate the usefulness of the method. A simple rubber band that resists stretching and absorbs and releases a chemical concentration is simulated as a first example. Complete convergence results are presented for this benchmark case. Three more biological examples are presented: (1) an oscillating row of cylinders, representative of an idealized appendage used for filter-feeding or sniffing, (2) an oscillating plate in a background flow is considered to study the case of heat dissipation in a vibrating leaf, and (3) a simplified model of a pulsing soft coral where carbon dioxide is taken up and oxygen is released as a byproduct from the moving tentacles. This method is applicable to a broad range of problems in the life sciences, including chemical sensing by antennae, heat dissipation in plants and other structures, the advection-diffusion of morphogens during development, filter-feeding by marine organisms, and the release of waste products from organisms in flows.

Numerical Assessment of Zebra-Stripes-Based Strategies in Buildings Energy Performance: A Case Study under Tropical Climate

Urban growth has increased the risk of over-heating both in the microclimate and inside buildings, affecting thermal comfort and energy efficiency. That is why this research aims to evaluate the energy performance of buildings in terms of thermal comfort (operative temperature (OP) levels, satisfied hours of natural ventilation SHNV, thermal lag), and energy efficiency (roof heat gains and surface temperatures) in an urban area in Panama City, using superficial-heat-dissipation biomimetic strategies. Two case studies, a base case and a proposed case, were evaluated using the Designbuilder software through dynamic simulation. The proposed case is based on a combined biomimetic strategy; the reflective characteristics of the Saharan ant applied as a coating on the roofs through a segmented pattern such as the Zebra’s stripes (one section with coating, and another without). Results showed that the OP decreased from 8 to 10 °C for the entire urban zone throughout the year. A reduction of 3.13% corresponding to 8790 kWh per year was achieved for cooling energy consumption. A difference of 5 °C in external surface temperature was obtained, having a lower temperature in which the biomimetic strategy was applied. Besides, it was evidenced that a contrasted-reflectivity-stripes pitched roof performed better than a fully reflective roof. Thus, the functionality of Zebra stripes, together with the reflective characteristics of the Saharan ant, provide better performance for buildings’ thermal regulation and energy needs for cooling.

Study of a segmented ventilation system of the brake disc and determination of the aerodynamic and heat exchange characteristics of the airflow

This study aims determine a relationship between the aerodynamic and heat exchange characteristics of the air flow in a segmented ventilation system of the brake disc with improved heat dissipation in the boundary layer of the air flow. Classical equations of heat and mass transfer in the boundary layer of the air flow cooling the brake disc ventilation chamber were used. The cooling performance of the system was assessed using the method of similarity. The obtained theoretical findings were confirmed by CFD-modelling. Mathematical models were developed for vented discs with both continuous grooves and slotted grooves. A criterion for assessing the performance of brake disc ventilation systems was proposed, consisting in turbulization of the air flow inside the device under study. According to the obtained analytical dependencies, a 20-fold acceleration of the air flow decreases the turbulization parameter by 1.24 times. An increase in the temperature difference in the boundary layer by 8 times leads to an increase in the turbulization parame-ter by 86.2 times. Using the criterion proposed for assessing the work performance, the aerodynamic and heat exchange characteristics of the system under study were calculated. As a result, a relationship between the design parameters of the segmented ventilation system and improved heat dissipation in the boundary layer of the cooling air flow is proposed. The conducted CFD modelling confirmed the aerodynamic characteristics of the system under study obtained theoretical-ly. This mathematical model together with the turbulization parameter can be used when both developing modern vented brake discs and assessing the existing cooling systems of friction units in order to minimize the possibility of reduced heat exchange processes.

Temperature and curvature-dependent thermal interface conductance between nanoscale-gold and water from molecular simulation

Plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can convert laser irradiation into thermal energy and act as nano heaters in avariety of applications. Although the AuNP-water interface is an essential part of the plasmonic heating process,there is a lack of mechanistic understanding of how interface curvature and the heating itself impact interfacial heattransfer. Here, we report atomistic molecular dynamics simulations that investigate heat transfer through nanoscalegold-water interfaces. We confirmed that interfacial heat transfer is an important part of AuNP heat dissipation inAuNPs with diameter less than 100 nm, particularly for small particles with diameter≤10 nm. To account forvariations in the gold-water interaction strength reported in the literature, and to implicitly account for differentsurface functionalizations, we modeled a moderate and a poor AuNP-water wetting scenario. We found that thethermal interface conductance increases linearly with interface curvature regardless of the gold wettability, while itincreases non-linearly, or remains constant, with the applied heat flux under different wetting conditions. Our analysissuggests the curvature dependence of the interface conductance is due to the changes in interfacial water adsorption,while the temperature dependence is caused by heat-induced shifts in the distribution of water vibrational states.Our study advances the current understanding of interface thermal conductance for a broad range of applications.

Design and Experimental Analysis of Charge Recovery for Piezoelectric Fan

The piezoelectric (PE) fan is widely adopted in the field of microelectronics cooling due to its advantages of high reliability and good heat dissipation characteristics. However, PE fans driven by conventional circuits suffer from plenty of energy loss. To save energy, we propose an inductor-based charge recovery method and apply it to the driving circuit for the PE fan. Two inductor-based driving circuits, a single inductor-based driving (SID) circuit and a double inductor-based driving (DID) circuit are compared. The SID circuit has a simple structure and a slightly higher energy-saving rate, while the DID circuit introduces no additional oscillations and is more stable. The experimental results show that when the supply voltage changes, both circuits have a relatively stable energy-saving rate, which is about 30% for the SID circuit and 28% for the DID circuit. Moreover, the proposed circuits enjoy the same driving capacity as the conventional circuit, and the driven fan has the same cooling performance.

Descriptors of intrinsic hydrodynamic thermal transport: screening a phonon database in a machine learning approach

Machine learning techniques are used to explore the intrinsic origins of the hydrodynamic thermal transport and to find new materials interesting for science and engineering. The hydrodynamic thermal transport is governed intrinsically by the hydrodynamic scale and the thermal conductivity. The correlations between these intrinsic properties and harmonic and anharmonic properties, and a large number of compositional (290) and structural (1224) descriptors of 131 crystal compound materials are obtained, revealing some of the key descriptors that determines the magnitude of the intrinsic hydrodynamic effects, most of them related with the phonon relaxation times. Then, a trained black-box model is applied to screen more than 5000 materials. The results identify materials with potential technological applications. Understanding the properties correlated to hydrodynamic thermal transport can help to find new thermoelectric materials and on the design of new materials to ease the heat dissipation in electronic devices.to ease the heat dissipation in electronic devices.
