Mesoporous ZrO2with narrow mesopore size distributions has been prepared by the surfactant-assisted method of nanoparticle assembly. A series of VCrO/ZrO2catalysts with different V/Cr molar ratio (0.3, 0.6, 1.0, 1.3 and 1.6) were prepared by the wetness impregnation method and characterized by XRD, N2adsorption and TEM techniques. N2adsorption and TEM analysis revealed that the surfactant-assisted method prepared VCrO/ZrO2catalysts have wormhole-like mesoporous structure with uniform pore size distribution. VCrO/ZrO2catalysts have been applied for direct dehydrogenation of propane to propene. The optimistic catalyst was V/Cr-0.6 with highest yield of 41.7% the corresponding conversion of propane was 44.1% and selectivity to propene was 94.5% at 550 °C.

TiO2 materials were prepared from a titanium isopropoxide precursor by sol-gel processing in water media with or without various templates (polyethylenimine or Pluronic P-123). The photocatalytic efficiency of the samples was found to depend strongly on the use of and type of template added. Titania/Pluronic sols resulted in homogeneous anatase TiO2—rutile with uniform particle size distribution after calcination (400°C). Optical properties of the samples were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and crystalline structures by X-ray diffraction. A surfactant-assisted sol-gel process retarded crystallization of the anatase and rutile titania, which resulted in smaller grain sizes and presumably a larger active surface area. The morphology of the surfaces was obtained by AFM techniques. The highest photobleaching rate was found for samples deposited from the sol with the addition of the Pluronic P-123 surfactant, and it was almost twice as high as that for films deposited from sols with polyethylenimine.

It is shown, on the basis of experimentally determined adsorption isotherms of physical adsorption of nitrogen on two- and three-component mixtures of fine grained porous glasses with narrow pore-size distributions, that the polymodal mesopore-size distribution curves can be evaluated in case that the porous sample contains groups of mesopores differing rather significantly in size. The differentiation of groups of pores gets worse with wider pores where the demands on the accuracy of the relative pressure measurement grow stronger.
