Abstract In this work, a new type of zinc(II) coordination polymer {[Zn(HIDC)(BBM)0.5]·H2O} n (Zn-CP) was synthesized using 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid (H3IDC) and 2,2-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1,3-benzimidazole (BBM) under hydrothermal conditions. Its structure has been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Zn(II) ion is linked by the HIDC2− ligand to form a zigzag chain by chelating and bridging, and then linked by BBM to form a layered network structure. Adjacent layers are further connected by hydrogen bond interaction to form a 3-D supramolecular framework. The solid-state fluorescence performance of Zn-CP shows that compared with free H3IDC ligand, its fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced.

The complex silver(I) 3-carboxylato-1-pyridinioacetate monohydrate, [Ag{C5H4(COO)NCH2.COO}]n.nH2O, crystallizes in space group P21/c (No. 14), with Z-4, a 12.233(6), b 5.049(1), c 14.418(7)Ǻ, and β 94.96(4)°; the structure was refined to RF -0.057 for 1721 observed [I ≥ 3σ(I)] Mo Kα data. The silver(I) atom is coordinated by four carboxylato oxygen atoms in a distorted tetrahedral environment [Ag-O 2.284(5)-2.570(5)Ǻ]. The tridentate acetato group bridges the Ag1 atoms into a zigzag chain featuring an uncommon [Ag2( carboxylato -O,O′)(carboxylato-μ-1,1-O)] six- membered ring, and the coordination sphere about each metal centre is completed by the unidentate aromatic carboxylato group, resulting in a two-dimensional network in the solid. The lattice water molecule forms hydrogen bonds with the uncoordinated oxygen atom of the aromatic carboxylato group [2.755(9)Ǻ] and the coordinated oxygen atom of the acetato group [2.936(9)Ǻ].

Cs+(tolN5tol)- (1) is formed as a yellow crystalline precipitate after addition of a concentrated aqueous solution of CsCl to a concentrated solution of 1,5-Bis(p-tolyl)pentaazadiene(1,4) in ammonia. 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pccn with a = 3169(1), b = 434.3(2), c = 1109.4(7) pm, Z = 4. The structure contains (tolN5tol)- anions and Cs+ cations both occupying two-fold axes. The all-trans N5 zigzag chain is planar with localized double bonds N1 - N2 and N2′ - N1′ of 127.7 pm and shortened single bonds N2-N3 and N3-N2′ of 136.9 pm. The tolyl substituents are titled by 25.5° against the plane of the N atoms. Cs+ is surrounded in a square antiprismatic arrangement by eight N atoms of four N5 chains with distances Cs-N in the range of 314.6 to 366.2 pm.

In the title compound, C14H14N2O, the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is 5.54 (9)°. The conformation is reinforced by an intramolecular O—H...N hydrogen bond, which closes anS(6) ring. The pyridine N atom and methyl group lie to opposite sides of the molecule. In the crystal, the molecules are linked into a zigzag chain propagating in [0-11] by weak C—H...O hydrogen bonds.

With regard to crystal engineering, building block or modular assembly methodologies have shown great success in the design and construction of metal–organic coordination polymers. The critical factor for the construction of coordination polymers is the rational choice of the organic building blocks and the metal centre. The reaction of Zn(OAc)2·2H2O (OAc is acetate) with 3-nitrobenzoic acid (HNBA) and 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bipy) under hydrothermal conditions produced a two-dimensional zinc(II) supramolecular architecture,catena-poly[[bis(3-nitrobenzoato-κ2O,O′)zinc(II)]-μ-4,4′-bipyridine-κ2N:N′], [Zn(C7H4NO4)2(C10H8N2)]nor [Zn(NBA)2(4,4′-bipy)]n, which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The ZnIIions are connected by the 4,4′-bipy ligands to form a one-dimensional zigzag chain and the chains are decorated with anionic NBA ligands which interact further through aromatic π–π stacking interactions, expanding the structure into a threefold interpenetrated two-dimensional supramolecular architecture. The solid-state fluorescence analysis indicates a slight blue shift compared with pure 4,4′-bipyridine and HNBA.
