A single-crystal diffractometer using the time-of-flight (TOF) Laue technique had been operated for studies of structural and magnetic disorder and phase transitions in alloys and magnetic materials at the pulsed spallation neutron source facility of the KEK Neutron Science Laboratory (KENS). In various sample environments, the diffractometer has demonstrated its usefulness in measurements of diffuse scattering for studying local structures, and in surveys of reciprocal space for studying phase transitions and incommensurate structures under the conditions of varying temperature and magnetic field. Particular emphasis is placed on the fact that though the instrument did not receive high-flux neutrons for long wavelengths suitable for the studies of magnetic scattering, it gave good results on the observations of magnetic diffuse scattering and superlattice reflections. Remarks and future tasks of the TOF Laue technique are discussed in relation to the asymmetric pulse shape, separation of the inelastic scattering, and dependence of data correction on the sample quality.

A new implementation of the programMCGR[Pusztai & McGreevy (1997).Physica B,234–236, 357–358] for the calculation of pair distribution functions from neutron total scattering data using an inverse Monte Carlo algorithm is presented. The new implementation, calledMCGRtof, incorporates the resolution functions for time-of-flight neutron diffractometers, and is suitable for analysis of data from instruments such as GEM at the ISIS spallation neutron source. The effect of including resolution correctly is to increase the magnitude of the pair distribution function at larger distances. The working program is illustrated with total scattering measurements from crystalline AlPO4.

The Macromolecular Neutron Diffractometer (MaNDi) is located on beamline 11B of the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The instrument is a neutron time-of-flight wavelength-resolved Laue diffractometer optimized to collect diffraction data from single crystals. The instrument has been designed to provide flexibility in several instrumental parameters, such as beam divergence and wavelength bandwidth, to allow data collection from a range of macromolecular systems.

Time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction experiments on aligned stacks of lipid bilayers using the horizontal Liquids Reflectometer at the Spallation Neutron Source are reported. Specific details are given regarding the instrumental setup, data collection and reduction, phase determination of the structure factors, and reconstruction of the one-dimensional neutron scattering length density (NSLD) profile. The validity of using TOF measurements to determine the one-dimensional NSLD profile is demonstrated by reproducing the results of two well known lipid bilayer structures. The method is then applied to show how an antimicrobial peptide affects membranes with and without cholesterol.
