We study the quantum phase transition from the superfluid to the Mott insulator state in two- and three-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate with optical lattices using Bose–Hubbard Hamiltonian within the generalized Hatree–Fock–Bogoliubov approximation. The behavior of the depletion and the anomalous fraction has been investigated in the Mott insulator phase. We found that at T = 0, these quantities become significant in two and three dimensions. It is shown also that the dimensionality of the lattice enhances the anomalous density.

Our aim is to analyze the various energy functionals appearing in the physics literature and describing the behavior of a Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. We want to justify the use of some reduced models and control the error of approximation. For that purpose, we will use the semi-classical analysis developed for linear problems related to the Schrödinger operator with periodic potential or multiple wells potentials. We justify, in some asymptotic regimes, the reduction to low dimensional problems and analyze the reduced problems.

Rydberg excitation of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate is performed. We show how the dipole-blockade mechanism restricts the number of Rydberg atoms it is possible to excite in such a cloud. Using the super-atom model we then look at the feasibility of observing coherent effects in even stricter geometries, one dimensional optical lattices
