Supplementing organic biostimulants into growing media enhances growth and nutrient uptake of tomato transplants

Pour-through extraction can provide data indicating geranium container nutrient status for growers to diagnose nutritional problems and prevent plant loss. The objective of this study was to examine changes in growing media pH and electrical conductivity during the production cycle of 10 cultivars from each of the three geranium classes (zonal, ivy, and regal). Thirty cultivars of geraniums were grown in pots using standard commercial greenhouse production guidelines for 12 weeks. Pour-through extractions were performed every 5 d and media pH and electrical conductivity were determined on the collected leachate. While there was a significant reduction in media pH for zonal and ivy geraniums 36 d after transplanting plugs, only one regal cultivar exhibited a decrease in pH during the production cycle. Statistically significant differences for mean media pH and electrical conductivity were also observed among cultivars within each class at several sampling dates. The results of this study indicate that zonal, ivy, and one regal cultivar's media pH decreases rapidly from day 21 to day 36, and then returns to initial levels by day 46. Because of the importance of media pH to nutrient uptake, this study allows for a better understanding of nutritional problems that are linked to pH that frequently occur at the stage of growth. It also suggests that fertigation rates should be adjusted by cultivar and growth stage to address this pH variation.

The purpose of this study was to detect nutrient uptake and assimilation in woody plants subjected to growing media with some peat replaced by spent mushroom residue (SMR). Fragrant rosewood (Dalbergia odorifera T.C. Chen) seedlings were cultured in five types of growing media with SMR and peat in volumetric proportions of 0% (control), 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. With the increase of SMR proportion, ammonium- and nitrate-nitrogen (N) concentrations declined but available phosphorus (P) concentration and electrical conductance both increased. Seedlings in the full SMR substrates showed obvious mortality. Seedlings in substrates with SMR in proportions higher than 25% showed symptoms of excessive N and P toxicities. The utilization efficiency for P was highest in the 25% SMR growing-media. Mineral N in substrates had a positive relationship with growth and biomass but not with glutamine synthetase activity. Available P was negatively related with acid phosphatase activity in both leaves and roots. Un-composted SMR can replace 25% of peat in growing media for fragrant rosewood seedlings, benefitting P uptake and assimilation.

We studied the effect of some mineral waters and some of their constituents on the apical uptake of 14C-butyrate (14C-BT) and 3H-O-methyl-D-glucose (3H-OMG) by Caco-2 cells. Uptake of 14C-BT increased after a 20-minute exposure to 1 % (v/v) distilled water, and, compared to distilled water, it was decreased by Pedras Salgadas® 1 % (v/v) and Melgaço® 5 % (v/v), and increased by Vidago® 5 % (v/v). Moreover, it increased after a 48-hour exposure to Vidago® or Melgaço® waters (5 % (v/v)). Also, uptake of 14C-BT was reduced after a 20-minute exposure to MgCl2, MgSO4, or CaCl2. Uptake of 3H-OMG was reduced after a 20-minute exposure to Melgaço® water [1 % (v/v)], when compared to distilled water. Also, a 48-hour exposure to Pedras Salgadas® or Melgaço® water (5 % (v/v)) increased and decreased uptake, respectively. Finally, uptake of 3H-OMG decreased after a 20-minute exposure to MgSO4 or NaF. In conclusion, uptake of 14C-BT and 3H-OMG by Caco-2 cells is differently modulated by distinct mineral waters.
