Institutional repositories are powerful tools to facilitate global access to intellectual output by members of the institution, particularly in assisting them to preserve and maximize access to their research output globally. This exploratory study of the status of institutional repositories implementation in African countries using the global Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) and Transparent Ranking: All Repositories by Google Scholar, reports on the operational status and the performance of repositories. Factor analysis and cluster analysis are used to analyze the operational level of institutional repositories in African countries. The analysis showed that the typical performance of institutional repositories remains below average. The possibility of global open access to research results through institutional repositories in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Algeria, Sudan, and Egypt appeared to be relatively more feasible than other African countries. This study concludes that many organizations, institutions, and societies spend great efforts in support of open access implementation in Africa, however, the widespread implementation of institutional repositories is still very slow paced, and the performance of the implemented repositories was below expectation. Suggestions for regaining the intended direction of African institutional repositories are given based on the current status.

Laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) coupled with in vitro embryo production (IVEP) in prepubertal cattle and buffalo accelerates genetic gain. This article reviews LOPU-IVEP technology in prepubertal Holstein Cattle and Mediterranean Water Buffalo. The recent expansion of genomic-assisted selection has renewed interest and demand for prepubertal LOPU-IVEP schemes; however, low blastocyst development rates has constrained its widespread implementation. Here, we present an overview of the current state of the technology, limitations that persist and suggest possible solutions to improve its efficiency, with a focus on gonadotropin stimulations strategies to prime oocytes prior to follicular aspiration, and IVEP procedures promoting growth factor metabolism and limiting oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress.

Having an interpretable, dynamic length-of-stay model can help hospital administrators and clinicians make better decisions and improve the quality of care. The widespread implementation of electronic medical record (EMR) systems has enabled hospitals to collect massive amounts of health data. However, how to integrate this deluge of data into healthcare operations remains unclear. We propose a framework grounded in established clinical knowledge to model patients’ lengths of stay. In particular, we impose expert knowledge when grouping raw clinical data into medically meaningful variables that summarize patients’ health trajectories. We use dynamic, predictive models to output patients’ remaining lengths of stay, future discharges, and census probability distributions based on their health trajectories up to the current stay. Evaluated with large-scale EMR data, the dynamic model significantly improves predictive power over the performance of any model in previous literature and remains medically interpretable. Summary of Contribution: The widespread implementation of electronic health systems has created opportunities and challenges to best utilize mounting clinical data for healthcare operations. In this study, we propose a new approach that integrates clinical analysis in generating variables and implementations of computational methods. This approach allows our model to remain interpretable to the medical professionals while being accurate. We believe our study has broader relevance to researchers and practitioners of healthcare operations.

<p>At present, the majority of cardiac surgery interventions have been performed in the elderly with successful short-term mortality and morbidity, however significant difficulties must to be underlined about our capacity to predict long-term outcomes such as disability, worsening quality of life and loss of functional capacity.<br />The reason probably resides on inability to capture preoperative frailty phenotype with current cardiac surgery risk scores and consequently we are unable to outline the postoperative trajectory of an important patients’ centered outcome such as disability free survival. In this perspective, more than one geriatric statements have stressed the systematic underuse of patient reported outcomes in cardiovascular trials even after taking account of their relevance to older feel and wishes. Thus, in the next future is mandatory for geriatric cardiology community closes this gap of evidences through planning of trials in which patients’ centered outcomes are considered as primary goals of therapies as well as cardiovascular ones.</p>

There have been many calls to make research experiences available to more undergraduate students. One way to do this is to provide course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), but providing these on a scale large enough to accommodate many students can be a daunting undertaking. Indeed, other researchers have identified time to develop materials and course size as significant barriers to widespread implementation of CUREs. Based on our own experiences implementing CUREs at a large research university, we present a flexible framework that we have adapted to multiple research projects, share class materials and rubrics we have developed, and suggest logistical strategies to lower these implementation barriers.
