Next Generation Sequencing technologies have produced a substantial increase of publicly available genomic data and related clinical/biospecimen information. New models and methods to easily access, integrate and search them effectively are needed. An effort was made by the Genomic Data Commons (GDC), which defined strict procedures for harmonizing genomic and clinical data of cancer, and created the GDC data portal with its application programming interface (API). In this work, we enhance GDC harmonization by applying a state of the art data model (called Genomic Data Model) made of two components: the genomic data, in Browser Extensible Data (BED) format, and the related metadata, in a tab-delimited key-value format. Furthermore, we extend the GDC genomic data with information extracted from other public genomic databases (e.g., GENCODE, HGNC and miRBase). For metadata, we implemented automatic procedures to extract and normalize them, recognizing and eliminating redundant ones, from both Clinical/Biospecimen Supplements and GDC Data Model, that are present on the two sources of GDC (i.e., data portal and API). We developed and released the OpenGDC software, which is able to extract, integrate, extend, and standardize genomic and clinical data of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) from the GDC. Additionally, we created a publicly accessible repository, containing such homogenized and enhanced TCGA data (resulting in about 1.3 TB). Our approach, implemented in the OpenGDC software, provides a step forward to the effective and efficient management of big genomic and clinical data of cancer. The strong usability of our data model and utility of our work is demonstrated through the application of the GenoMetric Query Language (GMQL) on the transformed TCGA data from the GDC, achieving promising results, facilitating information retrieval and knowledge discovery analyses.

The relational data model is the dominant paradigm in the commercial database market today, and it has been for several years. However, there have been challenges to the model over the years, and they have influenced its evolution and that of database technology. The object-oriented revolution that got started in programming languages arrived to the database area in the form of a brand new data model. The relational model managed not only to survive the newcomer but to continue becoming a dominant force, transformed into the object-relational model (also called extended relational, or universal) and relegating object-oriented databases to a niche product. Although this market has many nontechnical aspects, there are certainly important technical differences among the mentioned data models. In this article I describe the basic components of the relational, object-oriented, and object-relational data models. I do not, however, discuss query language, implementation, or system issues. A basic comparison is given and then future trends are discussed.

An effective analysis of the battlefield situation and spatio-temporal data model in a sea battlefield has great significance for the commander to perceive the battlefield situation and to make the right decisions. Based on the existing spatio-temporal data model, the present paper gives a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of sea battlefield data, and chooses the object-oriented spatio-temporal data model to modify it; at the same time this paper introduces sea battlefield space-time algebra system to define various data types formally, which lays the foundation for the establishment of the sea battlefield spatio-temporal data model.

By analyzing the attributes of three-dimensional space data model, the integrated 3D spatial data adopts object-oriented method for digital landslide modeling. It achieves spatial data modeling for landslide geological entity. An experimental case is given to indicate the feasibility of this approach for spatial data modeling.
