The future development of Hong Kong owes a radical change in our current education curriculum. Modern views of learning argue that the conventional instruction mode of science curriculum should shift from a transmission approach to a constructivist approach through Problem-based learning (PBL). This is a radically different pedagogical strategy of posing significant, real world situations and providing resources, instruction to learners. The field is an ideal setting for conducting Problem-based learning because field problems are those authentic but often referred to as ill-structured. They are innately challenging in part because of no definitive or simple answers, thus require a full integration of knowledge across disciplines in the problem solving process. It is believed that students working collaboratively as a PBL group will benefit through repeated goal setting, planning, acting, sharing, reflecting, rethinking and refining. Kowloon Technical School has put into practice two PBL programs for S.6 and S.2 students with the support of the Department of Earth Sciences, the University of Hong Kong through her pioneering project, the “Problem-Based Learning in the Field”.

AbstractA panel session on undergraduate education in Emergency Medicine from a worldwide perspective was conducted at the Seventh World Congress of Emergency and Disaster Medicine in Montreal, in May, 1991. Desmond Colohan MD, of the University of Toronto (Canada) was the panel moderator. Panel speakers were: Louis Binder MD, Texas Tech University Health Services Center (USA); Wolfgang Dick MD, University of Mainz (Germany); Bernard Nemitz MD, Faculty de Medicine d'Ameins (France); Yoel Donchin MD, Hadassa Medical Organization (Israel); and Noriyoshi Ohashi MD, Tsukuba Medical Center (Japan).

The aim of the study was to analyse the content of museum labels from various periods in terms of their usefulness in creating new labels for exhibits included in museum collections. Nearly 5,000 museum labels from the years 1811 to 2017 were reviewed, for exhibits at the Museum of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Herbarium of the University of Wroclaw, and the Museum of Forensic Medicine at the Medical University of Wroclaw. On the basis of the collected information, an attempt was made to develop a ‘universal label’template, including a range of necessary information from the point of view of managing and maintaining the accessibility of the relevant collection.

In this presentation Lee Kit's art installation at the Venice Biennale in 2013 is used as a case study of the ways in which artworks represent and help to construct representations of Hong Kong's challenge to and subversion of an aggressive and powerful rising China. In contrast with the explicit social critique and grandeur of artworks exhibited in the China Pavilion, Lee Kit's art installation - "an impressionistic house" - in the Hong Kong Pavilion appears not only abstract but mundane and even trivial. As the artist was handpicked by the organizer, without any prior public consultation, there has been heated public debate on the extent to which it is representative of Hongkongness. I argue that the apparently trivial and ordinary elements of Lee's work constitute rather than reflect the new generation of Hong Kong art. These elements may also be part of a strategy for negotiating the political identity inescapably imposed on Hong Kong by China. Hong Kong art now has the potential to distance itself from or express skepticism toward the grand narratives presented by China, to paraphrase the writing of art historian David Clarke (1997). I believe part of the aims of the international conference on "Hong Kong as Method" held at the University of Hong Kong in December 2014 is to use the ordinary to destabilize and challenge Hong Kong's taken-for-granted political identity and thereby promote diversity and inter-Asian cultural dynamics.
