In this review of scholarship on bail and pretrial justice in the United States, we analyze how the field of bail operates (and why it operates as it does), focusing on its official and unofficial objectives, core assumptions and values, power dynamics, and technologies. The field, we argue, provides extensive opportunities for generating revenue and containing, controlling, and changing defendants and their families. In pursuit of these objectives, actors consistently generate harms that disproportionately affect low-income people of color and amplify social inequalities. We close with an analysis of political struggles over bail, including current and emerging possibilities for both reformist and radical change. In this, we urge scholars toward sustained engagement with people and organizations in criminalized communities, which pushes scholars to reconsider our preconceptions regarding safety, justice, and the potential for systemic change and opens up new avenues for research and public engagement.

In this paper, a numerical investigation of the steady laminar mixed convection flow in a porous square enclosure has been considered. This structure represents a practical system such as an external through flow of cooled-air an electronic device from its moving sides. The heating was supplied by an internal volumetric source with an uniform distribution at the middle part of its bottom, while the other walls were assumed thermally insulated. Moreover, the momentum transfer in the porous substrate was numerically investigated using the Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer law. The governing equations of the posed problem have been solved by applying the finite difference technique on non-uniform grids. For all simulations, the Reynolds number and the porosity have been fixed respectively to Re=100 and φ=0.9. Darcy’s value was varied in the range from 0.001 to 0.1. The results detected the existence of a radical change in the contour patterns for Richardson number equal to 11.76 and 11.77 with fixed Da=0.1. This behavior signified that the fluid is fully convected for higher Darcy number.

The Dovrat Committee (2004) in Israel, pointed up the need for radical change in teacher training programs and recommended introducing school reform programs, such as the New Horizons and the Courage to Change reforms, implemented in the Israeli education system over recent years. The article reviews future teachers’ needs that necessitate changes in the education provided by teacher training colleges. It describes research examining teachers’ professional identity development and desirable characteristics for the future teacher. Participants were 23 student-teachers studying in an M.Teach degree course. The research investigated their attitudes and perceptions concerning the image of the future teacher.

As we examine teleworking rules and best practices, we see people deal every day with the requirement to account for their time, performance, and efficiency. This can be emotionally charged due to a lack of clarity in the ways telework is managed, and that is why the authors examine radical change. Radical change involves behavioral indicators that can prove invaluable to starting or improving teleworking. The effect of emotion on radical change dynamics can be best understood by looking at the change process as separate components. There are three critical steps required to achieve radical change: receptivity, mobilization, and learning. At any fixed point in time, a person can accept the need for the proposed change if there is an interpretive, attitudinal state on the cognitive and emotional level. These steps are used to adjust to the cognitive and emotional levels of people involved in change operations.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is formed by a set of physical objects with embedded sensors, connected using a network so that they can collect and exchange data. Though the concept looks simple, its deployment in industry has enormous potential to bring major business benefits and radical change. This chapter examines IoT technology and how it is being used in the corporate environment. Based on a review of existing literature and case examples, the various definitions and elements of IoT are discussed, followed by an assessment of how IoT is being used and what benefits are being delivered. Some key emergent themes are then examined – security aspects, the significance of 5G networks, and the need for an IoT strategy and project implementation guidelines. The chapter concludes by outlining possible areas for future research and suggests a step-change in the mega-infrastructure connecting IoT devices is imminent.

The article analyzes the novel of the modern Russian writer A. Potyomkin Man is canceled (2007), which received a wide public response. The main idea of the work is the need for a radical change of the “mass man” of the turn of the XX-XXI centuries at the psychosomatic level. The ideological and compositional center is the specially built Rimushkino estate in the Oryol province, where the serf spirit of the Russian Empire at the turn of the XVIII-XIX centuries is reproduced. To answer the question of why the estate space of Russia is becoming the most representative field for anthropological experiments of the beginning of the XXI century, we consider the estate neo-myths of the Silver Age (the lost paradise on earth) and the Soviet period (the camp hell living in the mentality), as well as the imperial-colonial concept of the postmodern era (the estate as a frontier in the process of class-oriented internal colonization of the country). The multidimensional semiotics of the estate sets a new relationship between “metropolitan” and “provincial” concerning the other loci of the novel.

Abstract The teaching of problem-based learning is a didactic approach that requires a radical change in the role of the physics teacher because it is focused on learning, research, and reflection that students follow to reach a solution to a problem situation as a starting point for the acquisition and integration of knowledge in science. The results of a training action for physics teachers on the implementation, their perceptions, and perspectives on the feasibility of the problem-based Learning approach are presented. The study is quasi-experimental in nature with pre-test and post-test in the study variables. The results suggest that the teachers’ perceptions are positive, which is why they consider that its implementation in teaching is viable, however, they need more elements that facilitate their execution in the classroom, such as understanding the theoretical foundations and their pedagogical use successful in the classroom. It is concluded that, for the physics teaching process, problem-based learning is an innovation because it allows the student to learn actively, in which inquiry is relevant for the development of skills and appropriation of knowledge, which in the framework of natural sciences leads to the reconstruction of the scientific method.

This book addresses understanding of and solutions to teleworking, trustworthiness, and performance issues. Overall, it suggests using a strategic approach that encourages participation and that is required to achieve, understand, and build buy-in for teleworking. The organizationally sanctioned program must exist. The use of LMX is beneficial in exploring the factors that contribute to motivating the target audience: employees. A culture of self-motivation is necessary to empower employees, but there must also be a culture of enforcement when needed. Finally, buy-in at all levels of the organizations is crucial to the success of a telework program. The parts of the strategic approach mentioned here will be enhanced with the resources provided in this book: how to develop leaders, motivating employees, increasing productivity, using EI, managing radical change, and learning from the research provided. Viewed through the lens of a management context, these components make the recommended strategic approach possible and can deliver an effective framework for results.

Extreme conditions in wetlands may be the niche of development of colonies of bacteria. In this chapter, the authors study the gnotobiology of moderate bacteria within the saline wetland of Sidi El Hani. In terms of geology, the coring within the sedimentary filling of the wetland shows color variation from white, grey, black to red related to the variability of bacteria species. On the other hand, in terms of microbiological investigations, isolates of bacteria show a variability from Gram+ to Gram-, from oxidase+ to oxidase-, from catalase+ to catalase-. This geobiological variability is related to radical change in climatic conditions. In doing so, the wetland of Sidi El Hani may record the climatic variability during the Late Holocene. On the other hand, it may be considered as terrestrial analogue with a development of extremophiles.

Disruptive technology, or disruptive innovation, is undeniably one of the most significant concepts to emerge from management theory in the last three decades. Both its theoretical and practical impact has been far reaching. Notwithstanding this stellar impact, it seems unlikely that a small hyper-conservative, risk-averse SME with limited management training in concepts that have little immediate return on investment would choose to embark upon a radical change of direction sparked by new technology and innovation. Using an interpretivist, inductive, approach based on interview material and personal observation, this chapter examines the realities of business strategy, how disruption is perceived, management decisions made, technologies introduced, and change management enacted in this family-run business. The chapter concludes that change perception and change management are related to efficiency and threat responses rather than disruption to business models or technology availability.
