The aim of the article is to present a concept of the Polish Biographical Dictionary (Polski Słownik Biograficzny, PSB), which has been published in Krakow since 1935 as a multi-volume publication of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), and realised by the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the PAN. Over 28,000 biographies of people associated with Poland (and with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Commonwealth of Both Nations, and their fiefs), who lived or operated in the country and abroad from the time of legendary Duke Popiel (9th century) to 2000, have been published in 52 volumes so far. The concept of the PSB is presented in the historiographic context as well as the context of contemporary problems and challenges that the PSB is facing.

In this paper, we define the virtual Alexander polynomial following the works of Boden et al. (2016) [Alexander invariants for virtual knots, J. Knot Theory Ramications 24(3) (2015) 1550009] and Kaestner and Kauffman [Parity biquandles, in Knots in Poland. III. Part 1, Banach Center Publications, Vol. 100 (Polish Academy of Science Mathematical Institute, Warsaw, 2014), pp. 131–151]. The properties of this invariant are explored and some examples are computed. In particular, the invariant demonstrates that many virtual knots cannot be unknotted by crossing changes on only odd crossings.

Ferns from the family Matoniaceae are characteristic but not very numerous elements of Early Jurassic floras of the Holy Cross Mountains. Based on historical specimens from the Geological Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, only partly published by Raciborski and Makarewiczówna, and a new collection gathered recently from the Gromadzice outcrop, two taxa are here recognised: Matonia braunii and Phlebopteris angustiloba, of which only P. angustiloba is rather frequent. Both species are represented by sterile and fertile specimens well comparable with historical and recently published material of these species from Greenland, Germany and Sweden. Specimens referred by Raciborski to Laccopteris elegans (illegitimate name) do not belong to Matoniaceae.

This paper discusses the issue of the language elements coming from sport professiolects which have been recorded by the Polish Academy of Sciences Great Dictionary of Polish (WSJP PAN) and labelled as sport. pot. (sport coll.). The author ponders on the reasons why the sport elements which were restricted to professional communication until a point in time are now entering the resource of a larger group of Polish language users and general dictionaries of Polish. Keywords: language of sport – lexicography – professiolect – sociolect – professionalism

In this article, we use the zombies as a metaphor for reforms in the Polish academy and a description of how neoliberalism works. According to the interpretation of the production of zombies as a critique of late capitalism, we want to show, by using an autoethnographic method, how subjectivity, relationships with others and the world are changing in the neoliberal regime. How do reforms attempt to transform subjectivity, and raise a new academic? Our co-autoethnography challenges the University of the (Un)Dead. We write together to show the experience of an insider (Oskar) and a quasi-outsider (former PhD student, Dominika). We are trying to show how nationalist authoritarianism emerges, at the same time, as part of the neoliberal regime. Our story is a record from the time of the apocalypse – an attempt to provoke. Let us trust the stories.

There has long been interest in the sources of ionospheric variability, especially in how this variability can be caused by the dynamics of the neutral atmosphere. Many studies have found planetary wave fluctuations in ionospheric parameters, especially f0F2, with periods ranging from 2 to 20 days. We investigate variations of the geomagnetic field and critical frequency of the F2-layer in the range of planetary waves in winter. We used the data of geomagnetic monitoring at the Central Geophysical Observatory at Belsk of Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland, Belsk) and the results of high-frequency sounding of the ionosphere in the form of ionograms obtained by the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland, Warsaw). In the spectra of temporal variations of the geomagnetic field and the critical frequency of the ionospheric F2 layer in the range of planetary waves periods in winter season, we found both harmonics associated with the modulation effect of longer-period (annual and 11-year) variations and tidal effects, and a harmonic corresponding to a quasi 16-day planetary wave. Possible mechanisms of their manifestations in the upper atmosphere are discussed.
