We study representations of o-orders, that is, of o-regular -algebras, in the case that o is a Dedekind domain. Our main concern is with those -modules, called -representation modules, which are regular as o-modules. For any -module M we denote by D(M) the ideal consisting of the elements x ∈ o such that x.Ext1(M, N) = 0 for all -modules N, where Ext = Ext(,0) is the relative functor of Hochschild (5). To compute D(M) we need the small amount of homological algebra presented in § 1. In § 2 we show that the -representation modules with rational hulls isomorphic to direct sums of right ideal components of the rational hull A of , called principal-modules, are characterized by the property that D(M) ≠ 0. The (, o)-projective -modules are those with D(M) = 0. We observe that D(M) divides the ideal I() of (2) for every M , and give another proof of the fact that I() ≠ 0 if and only if A is separable. Up to this point, o can be taken to be an arbitrary integral domain.

AbstractDedekind domains, Artinian serial rings and right uniserial rings share the following property: Every cyclic right module is a direct sum of uniform modules. We first prove the following improvement of the well-known Osofsky-Smith theorem: A cyclic module with every cyclic subfactor a direct sum of extending modules has finite Goldie dimension. So, rings with the above-mentioned property are precisely rings of the title. Furthermore, a ring R is right q.f.d. (cyclics with finite Goldie dimension) if proper cyclic (≇ RR) right R-modules are direct sums of extending modules. R is right serial with all prime ideals maximal and ∩n ∈ ℕJn = Jm for some m ∈ ℕ if cyclic right R-modules are direct sums of quasi-injective modules. A right non-singular ring with the latter property is right Artinian. Thus, hereditary Artinian serial rings are precisely one-sided non-singular rings whose right and left cyclic modules are direct sums of quasi-injectives.

In this paper, we characterize [Formula: see text]-extending (Goldie extending) modules over Dedekind domains and we use the [Formula: see text]-extending condition to characterize the modules over a principal ideal domain whose pure submodules are direct summands. Moreover, we show that if R is a principal ideal domain, then the class of [Formula: see text]-extending modules is closed under direct summands and that if R is a Dedekind domain, then the class of [Formula: see text]-extending torsion modules is closed under finite direct sums.

AbstractIn the paper we formulate a criterion for the nonsingularity of a bilinear form on a direct sum of finitely many invertible ideals of a domain. We classify these forms up to isometry and, in the case of a Dedekind domain, up to similarity.

Let [Formula: see text] be the class of abelian p-groups. A non-empty proper subclass [Formula: see text] is bounded if it is closed under subgroups, additively bounded if it is also closed under direct sums and perfectly bounded if it is additively bounded and closed under filtrations. If [Formula: see text], we call the partition of [Formula: see text] given by [Formula: see text] a B/U-pair. We state most of our results not in terms of bounded classes, but rather the corresponding B/U-pairs. Any additively bounded class contains a unique maximal perfectly bounded subclass. The idea of the length of a reduced group is generalized to the notion of the length of an additively bounded class. If λ is an ordinal or the symbol ∞, then there is a natural largest and smallest additively bounded class of length λ, as well as a largest and smallest perfectly bounded class of length λ. If λ ≤ ω, then there is a unique perfectly bounded class of length λ, namely the pλ-bounded groups that are direct sums of cyclics; however, this fails when λ > ω. This parallels results of Dugas, Fay and Shelah (1987) and Keef (1995) on the behavior of classes of abelian p-groups with elements of infinite height. It also simplifies, clarifies and generalizes a result of Cutler, Mader and Megibben (1989) which states that the pω + 1-projectives cannot be characterized using filtrations.

We define prime uniserial modules as a generalization of uniserial modules. We say that an [Formula: see text]-module [Formula: see text] is prime uniserial ([Formula: see text]-uniserial) if its prime submodules are linearly ordered by inclusion, and we say that [Formula: see text] is prime serial ([Formula: see text]-serial) if it is a direct sum of [Formula: see text]-uniserial modules. The goal of this paper is to study [Formula: see text]-serial modules over commutative rings. First, we study the structure [Formula: see text]-serial modules over almost perfect domains and then we determine the structure of [Formula: see text]-serial modules over Dedekind domains. Moreover, we discuss the following natural questions: “Which rings have the property that every module is [Formula: see text]-serial?” and “Which rings have the property that every finitely generated module is [Formula: see text]-serial?”.

This paper characterises the integral domains R with the property that R/P is integrally closed for each prime ideal P of R. It is shown that Dedekind domains are the only Noetherian domains with this property. On the other hand, each integrally closed going-down domain has this property. Related properties and examples are also studied.
