Lagrangian conditional statistics, acceleration and local relative motion in numerically simulated isotropic turbulence

Lagrangian statistics of fluid-particle velocity and acceleration conditioned on fluctuations of dissipation, enstrophy and pseudo-dissipation representing different characteristics of local relative motion are extracted from a direct numerical simulation database of stationary (forced) homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The grid resolution in the simulations is up to 20483, and the Taylor-scale Reynolds number ranges from about 40 to 650, where characteristics of small-scale intermittency in the Eulerian flow field are well developed. A key joint statistic of the conditioning variables is the dissipation-enstrophy cross-correlation, which is asymmetric, but becomes less so at high Reynolds number. Conditional velocity autocorrelations are consistent with rapid changes in the velocity of fluid particles moving in regions of large velocity gradients. Examination of statistics conditioned upon enstrophy, especially in a local coordinate frame moving with the vorticity vector, and of the centripetal acceleration suggests the presence of vortex-trapping effects which persist for several Kolmogorov time scales. Further results on acceleration statistics and joint velocity-acceleration autocorrelations are also presented to help characterize in detail the properties of a joint stochastic process of velocity, acceleration and the pseudo-dissipation. Together with recent work on Eulerian conditional acceleration and Reynolds-number dependence of basic Lagrangian quantities, the present results are directly useful for the development of a new stochastic model formulated to account for intermittency and Reynolds-number effects as described in detail in a companion paper.

A four-bladed, squirrel-cage, and scaled vertical kinetic turbine was designed, instrumented and tested in the water tunnel facilities at the University of Manitoba. With a solidity of 1.3 and NACA0021 blade profile, the turbine is classified as a high solidity model. Results were obtained for conditions during freewheeling at various Reynolds numbers. In this study, the freewheeling tip speed ratio, which relates the ratio of maximum blade speed to the free stream velocity at no load, was divided into three regions based on the Reynolds number. At low Reynolds numbers, the tip speed ratio was lower than unity and blades were in a stall condition. At the end of the first region, there was a sharp increase of the tip speed ratio so the second region has a tip speed ratio significantly higher than unity. In this region, the tip speed ratio increases almost linearly with Reynolds number. At high Reynolds numbers, the tip speed ratio is almost independent of Reynolds number in the third region. It should be noted that the transition between these three regions is a function of the blade profile and solidity. However, the three-region behavior is applicable to turbines with different profiles and solidities.

In a channel flow, the velocity fluctuations are inhomogeneous and anisotropic. Yet, the small-scale properties of the flow are expected to behave in an isotropic manner in the very-large-Reynolds-number limit. We consider the statistical properties of small-scale velocity fluctuations in a turbulent channel flow at moderately high Reynolds number ($Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\approx 1000$), using the Johns Hopkins University Turbulence Database. Away from the wall, in the logarithmic layer, the skewness of the normal derivative of the streamwise velocity fluctuation is approximately constant, of order 1, while the Reynolds number based on the Taylor scale is $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}\approx 150$. This defines a small-scale anisotropy that is stronger than in turbulent homogeneous shear flows at comparable values of $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}$. In contrast, the vorticity–strain correlations that characterize homogeneous isotropic turbulence are nearly unchanged in channel flow even though they do vary with distance from the wall with an exponent that can be inferred from the local dissipation. Our results demonstrate that the statistical properties of the fluctuating velocity gradient in turbulent channel flow are characterized, on one hand, by observables that are insensitive to the anisotropy, and behave as in homogeneous isotropic flows, and on the other hand by quantities that are much more sensitive to the anisotropy. How this seemingly contradictory situation emerges from the simultaneous action of the flux of energy to small scales and the transport of momentum away from the wall remains to be elucidated.

Large eddy simulations (LES) were made of flows around a generic ground vehicle with sharp edges at the rear end (an Ahmed body with a 25° angle of the rear slanted surface). Separation of the flow at the rear results in large regions with recirculating flow. As the separation is determined by the geometry, the Reynolds number effects are minimized. Resolution requirements of this recirculating flow are smaller than those in LES of wall attached flows. These two consequences of the geometry of the body are used to predict the experimental flow at relatively high Reynolds number. Recommendations are presented for the preparation and realization of LES for vehicle flows. Comparison of the LES results with the experimental data shows good agreement.

Small-scale velocity fluctuations in turbulent boundary layers are often coupled with the larger-scale motions. Studying the nature and extent of this scale interaction allows for a statistically representative description of the small scales over a time scale of the larger, coherent scales. In this study, we consider temporal data from hot-wire anemometry at Reynolds numbers ranging from Re τ ≈2800 to 22 800, in order to reveal how the scale interaction varies with Reynolds number. Large-scale conditional views of the representative amplitude and frequency of the small-scale turbulence, relative to the large-scale features, complement the existing consensus on large-scale modulation of the small-scale dynamics in the near-wall region. Modulation is a type of scale interaction, where the amplitude of the small-scale fluctuations is continuously proportional to the near-wall footprint of the large-scale velocity fluctuations. Aside from this amplitude modulation phenomenon, we reveal the influence of the large-scale motions on the characteristic frequency of the small scales, known as frequency modulation. From the wall-normal trends in the conditional averages of the small-scale properties, it is revealed how the near-wall modulation transitions to an intermittent-type scale arrangement in the log-region. On average, the amplitude of the small-scale velocity fluctuations only deviates from its mean value in a confined temporal domain, the duration of which is fixed in terms of the local Taylor time scale. These concentrated temporal regions are centred on the internal shear layers of the large-scale uniform momentum zones, which exhibit regions of positive and negative streamwise velocity fluctuations. With an increasing scale separation at high Reynolds numbers, this interaction pattern encompasses the features found in studies on internal shear layers and concentrated vorticity fluctuations in high-Reynolds-number wall turbulence.
