New reptiles from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation of Arizona

New records of Late Triassic reptiles from the Chinle Formation of Arizona include a new species of small trilophosaurid, a sphenodontid, and two taxa of eolacertilians. ?Trilophosaurus jacobsi n. sp. is a small trilophosaurid showing affinities to the type of Trilophosaurus buettneri of the southwestern United States and Variodens inopinatus from the Upper Triassic of Great Britain. A sphenodontid is also reported along with maxillae tentatively referred to the Kuehneosauridae and a jaw fragment from a subpleurodont eolacertilian with polycuspate teeth.

Rauisuchids are large (2–6 m in length), carnivorous, and quadrupedal pseudosuchian archosaurs closely related to crocodylomorphs. Though geographically widespread, fossils of this clade are relatively rare in Late Triassic assemblages. The middle Norian (∼212 Ma) Hayden Quarry of northern New Mexico, USA, in the Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle Formation, has yielded isolated postcranial elements and associated skull elements of a new species of rauisuchid.Vivaron haydenigen. et. sp. nov. is diagnosed by the presence of two posteriorly directed prongs at the posterior end of the maxilla for articulation with the jugal. The holotype maxilla and referred elements are similar to those of the rauisuchidPostosuchus kirkpatrickifrom the southwestern United States, butV. haydenishares several maxillary apomorphies (e.g., a distinct dropoff to the antorbital fossa that is not a ridge, a straight ventral margin, and a well defined dental groove) with the rauisuchidTeratosaurus suevicusfrom the Norian of Germany. Despite their geographic separation, this morphological evidence implies a close phylogenetic relationship betweenV. haydeniandT. suevicus. The morphology preserved in the new Hayden Quarry rauisuchidV. haydenisupports previously proposed and new synapomorphies for nodes within Rauisuchidae. The discovery ofVivaron haydenireveals an increased range of morphological disparity for rauisuchids from the low-paleolatitude Chinle Formation and a clear biogeographic connection with high paleolatitude Pangea.

Abstract The Upper Triassic Tiki Formation of India has yielded several new cynodont taxa, which are described on the basis of multiple isolated teeth and a jaw fragment. A new species of dromatheriid, Rewaconodon indicus, is defined by a tri- and tetracuspid asymmetric crown, long anterior edge of the major cusp a, cingular cusps d and f, and marked constriction at the crown-root junction. Another new dromatheriid, Inditherium floris n. gen. n. sp., is characterized by a broad, flower-shaped pentacuspid crown, multiple cingular cusps, and a weak lingual cingulum is also described from the same horizon. In addition, a new mammaliamorph taxon, Tikiodon cromptoni n. gen. n. sp., is established on a tooth specimen, which has a shovel-shaped crown, three closely spaced main cusps, a pronounced lingual cingulum with multiple cingular cusps, and a root of incomplete root bifurcation. Such a tooth morphology occupies an intermediate position between the non-mammalian cynodonts and the early mammals, as is evident from the co-occurrence of various cynodont dental morphotypes in the Tiki Formation. Moreover, Late Triassic cynodonts occurred along narrow belts demarcated by paleolatitudes, though the Indian fauna shows both Laurasian and Gondwanan affinities. A new species of apoid wasps, Pseudoplisus willcoxi sp. nov., is described from Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. It is compared with all other species currently assigned to the genus. It has a remarkable overall color pattern, unique in Pseudoplisus, and a restricted collecting record: only a single specimen was collected outside of the Willcox area in Arizona (defined here as including the Animas area, New Mexico). Additionally, of the 34 remaining specimens, one was collected in 1974 and all other after 2001. In the present paper, the new species is diagnosed, described, and the relevant characters are illustrated. The geographic distribution and its heterogeneous collecting record are briefly discussed.

As currently defined, the genus Deltaspis Audinet-Serville, 1834, contains 16 species ranging in distribution from the southwestern United States to eastern Mexico. However, the generic distinction between Deltaspis and its closely allied genera, such as Crossidius LeConte, 1851 and Muscidora Thomson, 1864, is in need of clarification. According to Audinet-Serville, Deltaspis is so named due to its distinctive triangular scutellum (i.e., Δετα, delta, ασπιζ écusson), which is actually a commonly shared character of all these genera. Members of the tribe Trachyderini Dupont (1836), which includes the above genera, also have mandibles with an emarginate-truncate apex with the edge chisel-like or bifid. This modification of mouthpart appears to be for consumption of pollen and/or petals from composite flowers visited by the adult beetles (Krenn et al., 2005; Beierl & Barchet-Beierl, 1999). Other genera from this tribe with this modification of mandibles from North America, and mostly from Mexico, include: Chemsakiella Monné, 2006, Giesbertia Chemsak & Linsley, 1984, Hoegea Bates, 1885, Neocrossidius Chemsak, 1959, Paroxoplus Chemsak, 1959, Plionoma Casey, 1912, Schizax LeConte, 1873, and Tylosis LeConte, 1850. The remainder of Trachyderini genera have unmodified or simple mandibles with apex acute.

The North American crab spiders are now comparatively well known taxonomically. This is particularly true of the species in the large genus Xysticus, which has been twice revised continentally by Gertsch (1939, 1953) and treated in more regional works by Buckle and Redner (1964), Schick (1965), and Turnbull, et al. (1965). It seems probable that any additional new forms that will be discovered will be from remote parts of the continent or in sibling relationship with known species. Several species have, however, been described only from one sex.The purpose of this paper is to describe a distinctive new species of Xysticus from the mountainous parts of Arizona. Its structure clearly places it in the locuples group of the apophysate division of the genus, and its range suggests it to be an inland endemic of the southwestern United States.
