AbstractThe Caloplaca crenulatella species complex is monophyletic, based on analysis of ITS nrDNA sequences. It is characterized mainly by its ascospores and a simplified thallus. Caloplaca aquensis, C. borysthenica, C. interfulgens, C. lactea, C. marmorata and C. tominii represent well-defined monophyletic lineages within it. Caloplaca diffusa, described here as a new species, is a well-supported lineage with a distinctive phenotype. Caloplaca crenulatella s. lat. and C. ferrarii s. lat. are heterogeneous taxa appearing in four and two places respectively within our tree. Caloplaca ochracea also belongs to the group, although it has different ascospore characters. Caloplaca gyalolechiaeformis and C. pseudocitrina are later synonyms of C. tominii. Arctic and North American sorediate specimens morphologically very close to C. tominii represent a separate lineage recently recognized as C. erichansenii. The North American Caloplaca nashii has a C. crenulatella-like phenotype but does not belong to the C. crenulatella complex. The identities of Caloplaca lacteoides and Caloplaca epigaea are not clear, but the latter may be a terricolous ecotype of one of the entities within C. crenulatella s. lat. A key to the European species of the group is provided.

AbstractSwammerdami beirnei n. sp. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) is described from Vancouver district, British Columbia, and distinguished from the European species, S. pyrella (De Villers) and the North American species S. heroldella Hübner = syn. S. castaneae Busck, also = syn. S. cuprescens Braun by Duckworth (1965). Some biological aspects of the species are discussed.

AbstractMyzocallis (Agrioaphis) agrifolicola new species is described from specimens collected on Quercus agrifolia Nee in California. To aid in its recognition a key to the known North American species is given. The key includes Myzocallis (Myzocallis) carpini (Koch), which is a European species previously unknown in North America.

A new species, Pholis clemensi, referred to the family Pholidae, is named and described from 12 specimens taken in southern British Columbia waters and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Pholis clemensi is compared with other members of the genus, and a key is given to the North American species.

The genus Ambrysus Stål is the most species rich genus of Naucoridae. Multiple species groups in the genus have been proposed, including the North American Ambrysus signoreti Stål complex. Four new species belonging to the A. signoreti complex are described and illustrated: three from Mexico (Ambrysus brailovskyi Reynoso & Sites n. sp., A. henryi Reynoso & Sites n. sp., A. schuhi Reynoso & Sites n. sp.) and one from Mexico and Guatemala (A. sitesi Reynoso n. sp.), bringing the total number of described species of Ambrysus to 97.

This is the second in a series of papers intended to establish a Lower Jurassic ammonite zonation that takes into account the biostratigraphic and biogeographic peculiarities of the North American succession. In North America the lower boundary of the Toarcian is drawn at the first appearance of Dactylioceras above the last occurrence of Amaltheus and Fanninoceras. The lower Toarcian is represented by the Kanense Zone; the middle Toarcian by the Planulata and Crassicosta zones; and the upper Toarcian by the Hillebrandti and Yakounensis zones. Section 5 on the Yakoun River in the Queen Charlotte Islands is designated the stratotype for the Planulata, Crassicosta, and Hillebrandti zones; section 3 on the Yakoun River is designated the stratotype for the Yakounensis Zone; an ideal stratotype for the Kanense Zone is not presently known. Reference sections further illustrating the faunal associations that characterize the zones are designated in eastern Oregon (Snowshoe Formation) and northern British Columbia (Spatsizi Group). The Dactylioceratidae, Harpoceratinae, and Hildoceratinae provide the most important zonal indicators for the lower Toarcian; Dactylioceratidae, Phymatoceratinae, and Bouleiceratinae for the middle Toarcian; and Phymatoceratinae, Grammoceratinae, and Hammatoceratinae for the upper Toarcian. Phymatoceras hillebrandti is described as a new species.

I am hardly prepaled at present to accept Isodontia elegans, Smith, as a variety of I. apicalis, Smith. The differences between the two seem to be very constant, and their distribution appears to be somewhat different, elegans being more a southern and western form, while apicalis occurs chiefly in the central, eastern and northern States.
