Ultrastructural studies from tissues of Peruvian mummies ranging from 500 to 2000 years old have been carried out.Even though the tissues had undergone extensive autolytic alterations many subcellular structures were still present and it was possible to clearly identify them. The better preserved tissues were those which contained abundant collagen and connective structures (Fig. 1-3). The collagen fibrils in particular showed the characteristic cross striations. The thickness of the dark bands was 45-50 nm while the thickness of the light bands measured between 25-30 nm.

Malpighian tubules in insects arose primarily for the purpose of hydromineral regulation. In the small cabbage white Pieris canidia larva there are six tubules, with three on each side of the body. Together with the common cabbage white Pieris brassicae larva they are frequently encountered pests on cruciferous plants. Although physiological studies on the functions of Pieris brassicae larval malpighian tubules have been well documented, detailed ultrastructural studies on these tubules have not been thoroughly studied. For the sake of further understanding on how these malpighian tubules function an electron microscopic study of different regions of the malpighian tubules of Pieris canidia have been carried out.

Schistosoma mansoni cercariae were inoculated into the peritoneal cavity of naive mice and recovered 30 minutes later. Ultrastructural studies showed that neutrophils adhere to the larval surface and participate in the removal of glycocalyx by phagocytosis. This finding suggests that the neutrophils can play a role on the cercaria-schistosomulum transformation process.
