AbstractFirst aid (FA) services are provisioned on-site as a preventive measure at most public events. In Flanders, Belgium, the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders (BRCF) is the major provider of these FA services with volunteers being deployed at approximately 10,000 public events annually. The BRCF has systematically registered information on the patients being treated in FA posts at major events and mass gatherings during the last 10 years. This information has been collected in a web-based client server system called “MedTRIS” (Medical Triage and Registration Informatics System). MedTRIS contains data on more than 200,000 patients at 335 mass events. This report describes the MedTRIS architecture, the data collected, and how the system operates in the field. This database consolidates different types of information with regards to FA interventions in a standardized way for a variety of public events. MedTRIS allows close monitoring in “real time” of the situation at mass gatherings and immediate intervention, when necessary; allows more accurate prediction of resources needed; allows to validate conceptual and predictive models for medical resources at (mass) public events; and can contribute to the definition of a standardized minimum data set (MDS) for mass-gathering health research and evaluation.GogaertS, Vande veegaeteA, ScholliersA, VandekerckhoveP. “MedTRIS” (Medical Triage and Registration Informatics System): a web-based client server system for the registration of patients being treated in first aid posts at public events and mass gatherings. This paper describes architecture, design, and implementation of Multitutor a Web-based environment for the development the e-learning courses and for the use of them by the students. Multitutor is designed as a Web-classroom client-server system, ontologically founded, and is built using modern intelligent and Web-related technologies. Experience with Multitutor so far shows that both teachers and learners have positive feelings about using them as a support tool for creating and learning different courses. In order to illustrate the design of the system, this paper presents some details of Multitutor architecture.

A collaborative 3D viewer is the recent technology that allows geographically distributed designers to view and markup the same CAD model without the need of a specific CAD system. However, most of the currently available collaborative 3D viewers only enable asynchronous collaboration among distributed designers. This paper targets the development of a Web-based real-time collaborative 3D viewer, named GlobalView, which is designed to support synchronous collaboration. In particular, the 3-tier client-server system architecture of GlobalView is illustrated and the implementation details are described according to its two main units: GlobalView Server and GlobalView Client. Finally, an application scenario of the usage of GlobalView is also illustrated. This 3D viewer will serve as one function module in our collaborative CAD system dedicated to collaborative assembly modeling.

Web-based Code Management System (WCMS) is an essential tool for realizing information exchange in distant collaborative product design and manufacturing among global-based enterprises. A framework for WCMS is built up on a three-tier client/server system and the WCMS is developed utilizing JAVA and J2EE technologies. The developed WCMS mainly uses servlets and JSP to handle user inputs and manage and retrieve code data from the database through the JDBC driver, with the server components stored on a middleware program called Tomcat. The WCMS developed in this work has been successfully implemented in an enterprise.

In the Summer of 1994, SUNY Albany Libraries began an experiment with electronic reserve using WWW client/server system. A class in Online Bibliographic Searching was chosen for the study. Approximately 10 percent of the reserve readings (non-copyrighted items), as well as some exercises to be completed online, were made available electronically. Although all the students had some familiarity with computers, the good features were more appreciated by people with good computer skills. The apparent ease of access is often influenced by the user's willingness to use more features of the system. Those with home computers particularly appreciated the twenty-four-hour access from any location. Close communication between the instructor and the technical operators is the key to a smooth operation. Copyright issues, additional instruction load, and technical problems remain to be the challenges. It indicates that the technical ease of maintenance gives it great potential to become popular in electronic reserves.

Purpose – Passwords have been designed to protect individual privacy and security and widely used in almost every area of our life. The strength of passwords is therefore critical to the security of our systems. However, due to the explosion of user accounts and increasing complexity of password rules, users are struggling to find ways to make up sufficiently secure yet easy-to-remember passwords. This paper aims to investigate whether there are repetitive patterns when users choose passwords and how such behaviors may affect us to rethink password security policy. Design/methodology/approach – The authors develop a model to formalize the password repetitive problem and design efficient algorithms to analyze the repeat patterns. To help security practitioners to analyze patterns, the authors design and implement a lightweight, Web-based visualization tool for interactive exploration of password data. Findings – Through case studies on a real-world leaked password data set, the authors demonstrate how the tool can be used to identify various interesting patterns, e.g. shorter substrings of the same type used to make up longer strings, which are then repeated to make up the final passwords, suggesting that the length requirement of password policy does not necessarily increase security. Originality/value – The contributions of this study are two-fold. First, the authors formalize the problem of password repetitive patterns by considering both short and long substrings and in both directions, which have not yet been considered in past. Efficient algorithms are developed and implemented that can analyze various repeat patterns quickly even in large data set. Second, the authors design and implement four novel visualization views that are particularly useful for exploration of password repeat patterns, i.e. the character frequency charts view, the short repeat heatmap view, the long repeat parallel coordinates view and the repeat word cloud view.

PurposeHeritage is the latent part of a sustainable built environment. Conservation and preservation of heritage is one of the United Nations' (UN) sustainable development goals. Many social and natural factors seriously threaten heritage structures by deteriorating and damaging the original. Therefore, regular visual inspection of heritage structures is necessary for their conservation and preservation. Conventional inspection practice relies on manual inspection, which takes more time and human resources. The inspection system seeks an innovative approach that should be cheaper, faster, safer and less prone to human error than manual inspection. Therefore, this study aims to develop an automatic system of visual inspection for the built heritage.Design/methodology/approachThe artificial intelligence-based automatic defect detection system is developed using the faster R-CNN (faster region-based convolutional neural network) model of object detection to build an automatic visual inspection system. From the English and Dutch cemeteries of Surat (India), images of heritage structures were captured by digital camera to prepare the image data set. This image data set was used for training, validation and testing to develop the automatic defect detection model. While validating this model, its optimum detection accuracy is recorded as 91.58% to detect three types of defects: “spalling,” “exposed bricks” and “cracks.”FindingsThis study develops the model of automatic web-based visual inspection systems for the heritage structures using the faster R-CNN. Then it demonstrates detection of defects of spalling, exposed bricks and cracks existing in the heritage structures. Comparison of conventional (manual) and developed automatic inspection systems reveals that the developed automatic system requires less time and staff. Therefore, the routine inspection can be faster, cheaper, safer and more accurate than the conventional inspection method.Practical implicationsThe study presented here can improve inspecting the built heritages by reducing inspection time and cost, eliminating chances of human errors and accidents and having accurate and consistent information. This study attempts to ensure the sustainability of the built heritage.Originality/valueFor ensuring the sustainability of built heritage, this study presents the artificial intelligence-based methodology for the development of an automatic visual inspection system. The automatic web-based visual inspection system for the built heritage has not been reported in previous studies so far.
