The object of this note is to record a property of finite, perfect, centrally closed groups, where, by definition, G si centrally closed if and only if whenever E/Z ≅ G and Z ⊆ E' ∩ Z(E), then Z = 1.

There has been a recent increase of interest in the phenomenon of power amongst linguists and also philosophers. The presented article attempts to consider power and ways in which it is exercised through language of computer-mediated communication (further CMC). This unique environment is determined by the specific conditions of an Internet chat room, such as anonymity and no audio-visual cues. In the theoretical part, Watts’s and Diamond’s investigations of power in various open and closed groups in oral communication are discussed and the notion of status is presented. The author divides the chat group corpus into individual sub-groups and tries to draw a graphical presentation, a sociogram, to show their complexity and distribution of power. However, the question remains how tight the sub-groups in CMC are or how interrelated they are with one another. In this respect, it is noteworthy to observe how a selected chat participant develops her status in various sub-groups and to analyze the means by which this possible status is achieved. The corpus was collected by the author herself. The main hypothesis is that the status of power changes quickly throughout chatting and it depends to a great extent on other cues such as address, non-verbal action displays, punctuation marks and so on. In other words, there are very few means by which to exercise power and hold it in this continuously changing and anonymous environment.

IntroductionIn contrast to psychopharmacological treatment, the current evidence base in psychotherapy for people with IDD is limited. But psychotherapeutic approaches offer an alternative treatment modality in people with IDD.ObjectivesOrientated on the “Dialectic-Behaviour-Therapy” concept, we developed an adapted manual for people with IDD and impulsive behaviour.AimsThis study presents the first results of an evaluation our adapted DBT manual.MethodsThree closed groups with 11 patients in total were prospectively included in a six-week in-patient psychotherapeutic DBT-programme. There was no randomisation or control group. Typical borderline symptoms (BS) were recorded using the “Borderline Symptom List” (BSL) and a short screening version for personality disorders (PSS-K). Impulsivity and behaviour in general were observed with the scale for impulsiveness and emotional deregulation (IES) and the German Developmental Behavioural Checklist (VFE). Special tendencies to self-harm were assessed using the scale for self-harm behaviour (IEFAS). From these scales, the means were observed during the course of our hospital therapy program over 6 weeks.ResultsThere were 19 patients in total in 3 different groups. Eight dropped out for a variety of reasons. The mean scores for the remaining 11 patients in the BSL and PSS-K reduced significantly. The scores for impulsivity and self-harm improved. Overall, there was no significant change in behaviour.ConclusionThis study presents the results of a trial of a DBT manual for people with IDD and BS. In general the BS declined, the impulsivity improved. The study is limited by the small numbers in the patient sample and the absence of a control group.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his/her declaration of competing interest.
