Lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate and lead zirconate titanate epitaxial films with (100) and (111) orientations were grown respectively on (100) and (111) niobium, lending conductivity to strontium titanate through chemical solution deposition. This study investigated changes in the ordinary and extraordinary refractive index no and ne induced in these films by an electric field using the prism-coupling method. In the (100) epitaxial PZT 30/70 film, anisotropic electro-optic effects arise from the Pockels effect. The isotropic electro-optic effect, which is no = ne , was achieved on (100) epitaxial PLZT 8/65/35 and PZT 70/30 films.

AbstractEpitaxial LiNbO3 films were grown on a-cut sapphire, i.e., α-A12O3(0112), substrates by pulsed laser deposition. It is found the oxygen pressure is an important deposition parameter to influence the orientations of the LiNbO3 films. At an oxygen pressure of 10−1 torr, LiNbO3(0001) film was grown epitaxially. And, at a low oxygen pressure (i.e., 5x10−4 torr), LiNbO3(1120) film was grown epitaxially. Due to the anisotropic electro-optic (EO) constants, these films with the different orientations display large differences in their EO properties: the epitaxial LiNb3(0001) film shows little EO effects, but the LiNbO3(1120) film shows a large quadratic EO behavior with an effective coefficient of 2.38×10−5 m2/V2. The dependence of EO effects on the orientations of the epitaxial films was analyzed in terms of the linear and quadratic EO tensors of LiNbO3.

AbstractGraphene integrated photonics provides several advantages over conventional Si photonics. Single layer graphene (SLG) enables fast, broadband, and energy-efficient electro-optic modulators, optical switches and photodetectors (GPDs), and is compatible with any optical waveguide. The last major barrier to SLG-based optical receivers lies in the current GPDs’ low responsivity when compared to conventional PDs. Here we overcome this by integrating a photo-thermoelectric GPD with a Si microring resonator. Under critical coupling, we achieve >90% light absorption in a ~6 μm SLG channel along a Si waveguide. Cavity-enhanced light-matter interactions cause carriers in SLG to reach ~400 K for an input power ~0.6 mW, resulting in a voltage responsivity ~90 V/W, with a receiver sensitivity enabling our GPDs to operate at a 10−9 bit-error rate, on par with mature semiconductor technology, but with a natural generation of a voltage, rather than a current, thus removing the need for transimpedance amplification, with a reduction of energy-per-bit, cost, and foot-print.

Single crystal films in (001) orientation, about 1500 Å thick, were produced by R-F sputtering of Al + 4 wt % Cu onto cleaved KCl at 150°C substrate temperature. The as-deposited films contained numerous θ-CuAl2 particles (C16 structure) about 0.1μ in size. They were transferred onto Mo screens, solution treated and rapidly cooled (within about ½ min) so as to retain a homogeneous solid solution. Subsequently, the films were aged in vacuum at various temperatures in order to induce precipitation and to compare structures and morphologies of precipitate particles in Al-Cu films with those found in age hardened bulk material.Aging for 3 weeks at 60°C or 48 hrs at 100°C did not produce any detectable change in high resolution micrographs or diffraction patterns. In this range Guinier-Preston zones (GP) form in quenched bulk material. The absence of GP in the present experiments in this aging range is perhaps due to the cooling rate employed, which might be more equivalent to an aged and reverted bulk material than to a quenched one.
