Although self-healing protective coatings have been widely studied, systematic research on healing performance of the coating according to damage width has been rare. In addition, there has been rare reports of self-healing of the protective coating having damage width wider than 100 µm. In this study, self-healing performance of a microcapsule type self-healing protective coating on cement mortar was studied for the coating with damage width of 100–300 µm. The effect of capsule-loading (20 wt%, 30 wt% and 40 wt%), capsule size (65-, 102- and 135-µm-mean diameter) and coating thickness (50-, 80- and 100-µm-thick undercoating) on healing efficiency was investigated by water sorptivity test. Accelerated carbonation test, chloride ion penetration test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) study were conducted for the self-healing coating with a 300-µm-wide damage. Healing efficiency of the self-healing coating decreased with increasing damage width. As capsule-loading, capsule size or coating thickness increased, healing efficiency of the self-healing coating increased. Healing efficiency of 76% or higher was achieved using the self-healing coating with a 300-µm-wide scratch. The self-healing coating with a 200-µm-wide crack showed healing efficiency of 70% or higher. The self-healing coating having a 300-µm-wide scratch showed effective protection of the substrate mortar from carbonation and chloride ion penetration, which was supported by SEM study.

Abstract The given article presents some results of the scientific research devoted to the development of a new class of scale-resistant powder materials of the Si-Ti-Mo-B system for thermal spraying and using these materials for the creation of heat-resistant coatings on the niobium base alloys by means of various methods of thermal spraying. Also under consideration are problems relating to the theory and practice of obtaining reliable protective coatings on high-melting metals and their alloys, niobium ones included, intended for operation in high-enthalpy oxygen-containing gas flows. Hazard in commencing an oxidation reaction of the base material under coating is connected with density of open pores and cracks, and partial pressure of the oxidizer. Powdered multicomponent heterophase materials for gas-thermal spraying of protective coating with a self-healing ability and controlled properties are proposed. Finally the results of some properties of new silicide-type heterophase powders containing silicide and boride phases for a thermal spraying process and some properties of protective coating deposited on the niobium base alloys by means of a thermal spraying technique are presented.

AbstractOne of the pillars of developed economics is modern transport, where there is always a high demand for the elaboration of lightweight efficient vehicles and transport facilities. Aluminum and magnesium alloys encounter continuously increasing applications in high-performance aircraft, automobile, and marine vehicles. Various advanced multilayered corrosion protective coating systems have recently been proposed to provide a reliable long-term corrosion protection combined with a number of supplemental beneficial properties. The present brief review is an attempt to summarize the basic trends and concepts regarding the elaboration of environmentally friendly multilayered and multifunctional corrosion protective coating systems. Our work summarizes these recent trends, including recently accepted environmental requirements. We have also distinguished the concepts for active and passive corrosion protection capabilities. The basic approach for the achievement of efficient active corrosion protection properties are outlined with suitable examples, such as inhibitor incorporation into ceramic or carbon nanoparticles, encapsulation of active self-healing compounds, reinforcing phase involvement and coating, finished by ultraviolet absorbers and hydrophobic compounds. As a main result, an entire conceptual model has been proposed based on the state-of-the-art analysis.
