Precise measurements on the density of sodium polystyrenesulphonate solutions in methanol-water mixed solvent media containing 8, 16, and 25 weight per cent of methanol at 308.15, 318.15, and 323.15 K are reported. The degree of substitution of sodium polystyrenesulphonate used is 1, and the concentrations are varied from 1×10-2 to 3.8 ×10-2 monomol.l-2. The results showed a slight increase on (V0) were determined. the partial molar volumes with increasing polyelectrolyte concentration. The partial molar volumes of the polyelectrolyte at infinite dilution, (effects of the  temperature and solvent composition on the partial molar volumes are also investigated. Keywords: Sodium polystyrenesulphonate, polyion, partial molar volume.DOI: 10.3126/jncs.v23i0.2100Journal of Nepal Chemical Society, Vol. 23, 2008/2009 Page: 82-88

The concentrations are varied from 0.3 - 1.0 x 10-1 mol.l-1. The results showed almost constant on the partial molar volumes with increasing surfactant concentration. Also, the partial molar volumes are found to increase with increasing temperature over the entire concentration range investigated in a given mixed solvent medium and these values are found to decrease with increasing methanol content in the solvent composition. Sodium lauryl sulfate is the most common surfactant used in the production of detergents, chloroprene rubber, plastics, artificial furs and in pharmaceutical industry. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a moderately hazardous substance when introduced into the stomach (DL50 for white mice and rats is in the range of 2086-2700 mg/kg), has a pronounced local irritant effect on the skin and mucous membranes of the eyes, has a skin-resorptive, sensitizing and pronounced cumulative effects. The threshold for acute inhalation action is set at 15,3 mg/m3 for changes in the function of the nervous system and irritating effects on the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract (an increase in the total number of cells in the nasal flushes).Recommended for approval tentative safe exposure level of sodium lauryl sulfate in the air of the working area is 0.2+ mg/m3 (aerosol).

Partial molar volumes of ammonium aluminium sulfate and potassium aluminium sulfate in DMF-water mixtures (5-20 wt.% of DMF) have been determined from solution density measurements at various temperatures and electrolyte concentrations. The data were evaluated by using Masson equation and the obtained parameters were interpreted in terms of ion-solvent and ion-ion interactions. Both electrolytes have been found to act as the structure makers/promotors in DMF-water systems.
