This chapter discusses how psychometrics can inform music performance assessment design decisions so as to help ensure valid and fair score interpretations and uses. An overview of music assessments at the national and state level is first presented. It is then argued that an argument-based approach to validity and a principled approach to assessment design is needed. Design and scoring features that impact the psychometric properties of performance assessments as well as psychometric considerations in the design of performance assessments such as comparability, generalizability, rater effects, and decision accuracy are addressed.
