Purpose: To explore dietetic practitioners’ perceptions of their education and training in the knowledge, skills, and confidence to understand social justice issues and to engage in socially just dietetic practice and social justice advocacy. Methods: An online semi-qualitative survey sent to Canadian dietitians. Results: Most respondents (n = 264; 81.5%) felt that knowledge- and skill-based learning about social justice and social justice advocacy should be a part of dietetic education and training. Reasons given by respondents for the importance of social justice learning include: client-centred care and reflexive practice, effecting change to the social and structural determinants of health, preventing dietitian burnout, and relevance of the profession. Yet, over half of respondents either strongly disagreed or disagreed that they were adequately prepared with the knowledge (n = 186; 57.4%), skills (n = 195; 60.2%), or confidence (n = 196; 60.5%) to engage in advocacy related to social justice concerns. Some questioned the practicality of adding social justice learning via additional courses to already full programs, while others proposed infusing a social justice lens across dietetic education and practice areas. Conclusions: Dietetic education and training must do more to prepare dietitians to answer calls for dietitians to engage in social justice issues through practice and advocacy.

Abstract Objective The current pandemic shed a necessary light on chronic systemic inequities. Despite awareness of the importance of diversity, equity, social justice, and advocacy, actionable change has been slow. The field of neuropsychology and psychology were founded on principles of universal rights for all humans, yet it has largely neglected social justice activities. Social justice and advocacy efforts are not universally embedded in education/training curriculums, nor in licensure requirements. If the field is pledging to move towards equity, systemic change is required. We offer practical considerations on how advocacy can lead neuropsychologists toward equity and social justice. Data Selection A review of the literature on racism, social justice, and health/mental health disparities, was conducted in the fields of neuropsychology, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, medicine, and public health, to form a systems-based approach to advocacy with actionable steps that can be taken by all. Tenents of critical consciousness, transformative learning, transformative justice and socially responsible neuropsychology emerged. Data Synthesis We utilize an ecological systems framework (microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem levels) to provide a graded, developmental approach for transitioning to a social change agent. Recommendations are offered to provide guidance on addressing inequities at multiple levels in an effort to uphold human rights and protection of all. Conclusion Neuropsychology has the opportunity to blaze a new trail that can effectively protect, include, and nurture all of its constituents equitably rather than equally. Transforming our field is possible through stepping into action by equipping our trainees and professionals with the tools to become agents of social change.

In this epilogue, Robin Hackett begins to theorize the future of the affective ecology of the modernist body as a raced body. Hackett’s essay reaches into the realm of twenty-first-century social justice advocacy in the current political climate—a climate in which the supremacy of white bodies and segregation of black bodies are constituted by spaces of access and exclusion—to ask of the modernist body, what’s next? Drawing on a framework of emotions that have been mobilized for critical activism, love, rage, and shame, and reading the spaces of schools and restrooms, care homes and gyms, Hackett questions the logic of how public affects circulate between black and white bodies and suggests instead that a blank affect may produce an ethical response that truly matters despite how it may make us feel.
