AbstractWe apply large eddy simulation technique to carry out three-dimensional numerical simulation of compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in conditions relevant local interstellar medium. According to large eddy simulation method, the large-scale part of the flow is computed directly and only small-scale structures of turbulence are modeled. The small-scale motion is eliminated from the initial system of equations of motion by filtering procedures and their effect is taken into account by special closures referred to as the subgrid-scale models. Establishment of weakly compressible limit with Kolmogorov-like density fluctuations spectrum is shown in present work. We use our computations results to study dynamics of the turbulent plasma beta and anisotropic properties of the magnetoplasma fluctuations in the local interstellar medium.

To analyze combustion oscillation in the premixed combustor, a large-eddy simulation program for premixed combustion flow was developed. The subgrid scale (SGS) model of eddy viscosity type for compressible turbulence (Speziale et al., 1988) was adopted to treat the SGS fluxes. The fractal flamelet model, which utilizes the fractal properties of the turbulent premixed flame to obtain the reaction rate, was developed. Premixed combustion without oscillation was analyzed to verify the present method. The computational results showed good accordance with experimental data (Rydén et al., 1993). The combustion oscillation of an “established buzz” type in the premixed combustor (Langhorne, 1988) was also analyzed. The present method succeeded in capturing the oscillation accurately. The detailed mechanism was investigated. The appearance of the non-heat release region, which is generated because the supply of the unburnt gas into the combustion zone stagnates, and its disappearance play an important role.

Mixing in pipe junctions can play an important role in exciting force and distribution of flow in pipe network. This paper investigated the cross pipe junction and proposed an improved plan, Y-shaped pipe junction. The numerical study of a three-dimensional pipe junction was performed for calculation and improved understanding of flow feature in pipe. The filtered Navier–Stokes equations were used to perform the large-eddy simulation of the unsteady incompressible flow in pipe. From the analysis of these results, it clearly appears that the vortex strength and velocity non-uniformity of centerline, can be reduced by Y-shaped junction. The Y-shaped junction not only has better flow characteristic, but also reduces head loss and exciting force. The results of the three-dimensional improvement analysis of junction can be used in the design of pipe network for industry.
