Australian Pheretimoid Earthworms (Megascolecidae:Oligochaeta): a Synopsis With the Description of a New Genus and Five New Genera.

Examination of new earthworm material from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, revealed the presence of five new species (one with two subspecies) of the Pheretima group of genera, family Megascolecidae. A new genus, Begemius, is erected to contain the new taxa (B. gavini, jamiesoni jamiesoni, j. hornensis, lockerbiensis, raveni and yorkensis), also the species cyclops, monoperus and queenslandicus which were previously accommodated in the genus Amynthas. A key is provided to the eight species in the genus and the Australian members are described. Other new pheretimoid material from Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales consists of allochthonous species only, representing new locality records and including four species, Amynthas gracilis, A. morrisi, Metaphire bahli and Pithemera bicincta, new to the Australian list. These species and the other eight allochthonous species of the Pheretima group reported from Australia, Amynthas corticis, A. minimus, A. rodericensis, Metaphire californica, M. houletti, Pheretima darnleiensis, Polypheretima elongata and P. taprobanae are reviewed, each is diagnosed and a key is provided for their identification.

A new genus, Wundacaenis, is erected for three new species of Australian caenid mayflies. The genus is diagnosed by possession of distinctive lobes on the anterolateral margins of the mesonotum. The distribution of Wundacaenis extends from the Kimberleys in Western Australia, through the Alligator Rivers Region in the Northern Territory, and down the eastern coast to the Shoalhaven River in New South Wales.

Six species of Batrachospermum from Australia and New Zealand have a twisted to coiled carpogonial branch and determinate gonimoblast filaments, and are therefore referable to section Contorta or Hybrida. Batrachospermum australicum KÜtz. ex sp. nov. from large rivers in tropical Northern Territory has a tightly 3-coiled carpogonial branch; B. vittatum sp. nov. from tropical Northern Territory has a characteristic longitudinal mid-whorl band of spermatangia; and B. deminutum sp. nov. from a single locality in eastern-central New South Wales has reduced whorls and long carpogonial branches. The other three species are cosmopolitan in distribution: B. virgatodecaisneanum Sirodot is widespread but uncommon in temperate regions of both countries; B. ambiguum Montagne is widespread and common in tropical Australia; and B. globosporum Israelson is restricted in Australia to near Brisbane in subtropical southern Queensland.

This paper presents the results of a study that was largely initiated to describe a genus and species of weevil damaging macadamia fruits in plantations in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. This taxon is described as Kuschelorhynchus macadamiae gen. et sp. n., the genus named in honour of the late Guillermo (Willy) Kuschel (1918–2017). The related genus Menechirus Hartmann is also revised, resulting in the description of three new species, M. howdenae sp. n., M. parryi sp. n. and M. mundus sp. n. The other genera of the small Australian weevil tribe Cryptoplini, Cryptoplus Erichson, Haplonyx Schoenherr, Sigastus Pascoe and Zeopus Pascoe, are diagnosed and their host associations summarised, and a revised diagnosis of the tribe Cryptoplini is presented, together with a key to its six genera. The extraordinary aedeagus of Cryptoplini, featuring a tectal plate as is characteristic of more primitive weevils, is discussed and illustrated.

The identity of Ewartia oldfieldi (Distant) is re-examined and this species is redescribed. Five new species belonging to the genus Ewartia Moulds are described. Ewartia oldfieldi s. str. occurs in association with wattles (Acacia spp.; Mimosaceae) with large or fleshy phyllodes growing in soils derived from sandstone and coarse-grained metasediments throughout the south-eastern third of Queensland. Ewartia roberti n. sp. is associated with wattles that possess narrow or delicate phyllodes, growing in loam soils in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. Ewartia lapidosa n. sp. occurs in dryer inland and semi-arid areas between Croydon in northern Queensland and the Capertee Valley in central New South Wales where it occurs on various wattles growing in hard, rocky soils, including those derived from laterite and sandstone. Ewartia etesia n. sp. occurs principally on wattles growing along drainage lines in the Top End of the Northern Territory and the eastern edge of the Kimberley in Western Australia. Ewartia thamna n. sp. occurs in low, shrubby vegetation (presumably on wattles) in gravelly soils on low rises and along floodplains at the southern edge of the Top End in the Northern Territory. Ewartia carina n. sp. occurs in transitional habitats with tropical rainforest elements on the eastern edge of Cape York Peninsula in north Queensland. The distinctive, sometimes variable and typically complex calling songs specific to each of the species are illustrated and documented as part of these descriptions and comparisons.

A complex of small scarabaeine dung beetles related to Lepanus Balthasar, 1966 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) is described, based on morphological and molecular characters. There are two new genera, six new species, and seven new combinations, including the transfer of one species to a pre-existing genus, as follows. Matthewsius Gunter & Weir new genus includes two new species, M. stricklandensis Gunter & Weir new species from central New South Wales, Australia and M. vanleeuweni Gunter & Weir new species from Pilbara region of Western Australia, Australia; two species formerly included within Aptenocanthon Matthews, 1974, M. rossi (Matthews, 1974) new combination and M. speewah (Storey & Monteith, 2000) new combination; and two species formerly included within Lepanus, M. illawarrensis (Matthews, 1974) new combination and M. penelopae (Matthews & Weir, 2002) new combination. Monteithocanthon Gunter & Weir new genus includes six species: Monteithocanthon elliotensis Gunter & Weir new species, Monteithocanthon koombooloomba Gunter & Weir new species, and Monteithocanthon paraarator Gunter & Weir new species from northern Queensland, Australia; Monteithocanthon peckorum Gunter & Weir new species from southwestern Western Australia; and two species formally included within Lepanus, Monteithocanthon arator (Matthews, 1974) new combination and Monteithocanthon glaber (Matthews, 1974) new combination. Sauvagesinella loftyensis (Matthews & Weir, 2002) new combination is transferred from Lepanus on the basis of genetic and morphological similarities.

The genus Agrotera Schrank, 1802 is revised for Australia and the generic definition is refined based on the male genitalia. The genera Leucinodella Strand, 1918 stat. rev. with L. leucostola (Hampson, 1896) comb. nov., Nistra Walker, 1859 stat. rev. with N. coelatalis Walker, 1859 comb. rev., Sagariphora Meyrick, 1894 stat. rev. with S. magnificalis (Hampson, 1893) comb. nov., and Tetracona Meyrick, 1884 stat. rev. with T. amathealis (Walker, 1859) comb. rev. and T. pictalis Warren, 1896 comb. rev. are removed from synonymy with Agrotera, as they lack the synapomorphies of Agrotera. Two new species, Agrotera genuflexa sp. nov. from Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales, and A. longitabulata sp. nov. from Queensland, are described. The taxonomic status of the Australian species of Agrotera is discussed, and a key to all species, based on males, is provided. The adults and genitalia of the new species and some related species are figured.

Eight new taxa of Eriophyidae mites associated with native trees in the Cupania genus—C. oblongifolia Mart. and C. impressinervia Acev (Sapindaceae)—from the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, are described and illustrated. They include two new genera and two new species of Nothopodinae, Colopodacini (Setibia domatiagena   gen. nov., sp. nov. and Aricolopodos alagoensis gen. nov., sp. nov.), one new genus and two new species of Cecidophyinae, Colomerini (Euryslobos keronidos gen. nov., sp. nov. and Gammaphytoptus cupanius sp. nov.), and one new species of Phyllocoptinae, Tegonotini (Shevtchenkella caboata sp. nov.).

In preparation for upcoming studies, several new taxa of Australian Erotylinae (Coleoptera: Erotylidae) need to be described to make names available. New genera and species in Dacnini and Megalodacnini are described. Echinothallis banderbearella, new genus and species (Dacnini); Microdacne, new genus, with four new species (Dacnini), M. gloriousa, M. lamingtonia, M. nardia, M. styxia; and Episcaphula (Tropidoscaphula) megalodacnoides, new species (Megalodacnini). Variation of female terminalia and other characters in several genera are discussed regarding the monophyly and generic diversity of Dacnini.

The vegetative and reproductive morphology of Vesselowskya Pampanini, southern marara, is described and illustrated in detail. The variation within V. rubifolia (F.Muell.) Pampanini sens. lat. is shown to be greater than has previously been recognised, with the differences identified supporting the recognition of a new segregate species, V. venusta Rozefelds, R.W.Barnes and Pellow sp. nov. Vesselowskya venusta occurs in the Barrington Tops Plateau of New South Wales and differs from V. rubifolia in possessing hairs on the abaxial surface of the sepals and lacking both a prominent distal connective protrusion on the anthers and colleters at the base of the stipules. The two Vesselowskya species are dioecious with a vestigial ovary in staminate flowers and reduced stamens in pistillate flowers. Dioecy is more pronounced in Vesselowskya, than in some Weinmannia species, and in both genera is expressed through reduction in the size of the ovaries in staminate flowers, and stamens in pistillate flowers. Vesselowskya shares with the other genera in the tribe Cunonieae (Pancheria, Weinmannia and Cunonia), a central column in the fruits, and Cunonia-type stipules, but differs from these genera in having valvate aestivation, digitate leaves, craspedodromous secondary venation with secondary veins terminating at a tooth, tuft domatia along the midrib, adaxial epidermal cells with strongly sinuous cell walls and the absence of hydathodes.
