The exact dynamics of a quantum damped harmonic oscillator coupled to a reservoir of boson modes has been formally described in terms of the coupling function, both in weak and strong coupling regime. In this scenario, we provide a further description of the exact dynamics through integral transforms. We focus on a special class of spectral densities, sub-ohmic at low frequencies, and including integrable divergencies referred to as photonic band gaps. The Drude form of the spectral densities is recovered as upper limit. Starting from special distributions of coherent states as external reservoir, the exact time evolution, described through Fox H-functions, shows long time inverse power law decays, departing from the exponential-like relaxations obtained for the Drude model. Different from the weak coupling regime, in the sub-ohmic condition, undamped oscillations plus inverse power law relaxations appear in the long time evolution of the observables position and momentum. Under the same condition, the number of excitations shows trapping of the population of the excited levels and oscillations enveloped in inverse power law relaxations. Similarly to the weak coupling regime, critical configurations give arbitrarily slow relaxations useful for the control of the dynamics. If compared to the value obtained in weak coupling condition, for strong couplings the critical frequency is enhanced by a factor 4.

AbstractIrradiation of the secondaries in close binary systems affects their appearance and can drastically change their internal structure and hence long-term evolution. In this paper we review the main effects of external irradiation in close binaries with compact primaries, such as the distortion of the shape of the secondary and the conditions for the occurrence of outer critical configurations, and apply these to normal X-ray binaries, including systems such as HZ Her/Her X-l, Vela X-l and black-hole binaries during outburst (e.g. Nova Sco). Particular emphasis will be given to the role of circulation driven by the external heating and the radiative surface stress. We have developed a three-dimensional fluid dynamics code for modelling these effects. We present initial results of self-consistent calculations for the circulation in irradiated systems and show how the inclusion of these effects is vital to the understanding and interpretation of any system where external irradiation of the secondary is significant.

This paper presents an approach for reconstructing a realistic 3D model of a building from its uncalibrated video sequences taken by a hand-held camera. The novelty of this approach lies in the integration of some prior scene knowledge in the different stages of the Structure From Motion problem (SFM). First, the coplanarity of buildings is considered in the calculation of the fundamental matrices to deal with the critical configurations. Second, the line parallelism and plane orthogonality are transformed to the constraints on the absolute quadric during camera auto-calibration. This makes some critical cases solvable and the reconstruction more Euclidean. The approach is implemented and validated using simulated data and real image data. The experimental results at the end of the paper show the effectiveness of our approach.
