The features of the structure and properties of corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant steels and alloys, the effect on the machinability of cutting and tool selection are shown. Issues related to the machining of corrosion-resistant steel are considered. The best workability of steels is achieved by heat treatment by annealing or tempering due to the separation of secondary phases from the solid solution. By changing and selecting cutting modes and cutting plate geometry, processing can be carried out at speeds up to 274 m / min, with a side allowance of up to 3 mm.

Increasing the efficiency processing of heat-resistant steels in conditions of continuous turning he work is devoted to the study of factors influencing the resistance characteristics of the cutting tool in the conditions of turning heat-resistant corrosion-resistant steels. Methods for increasing the wear resistance of the cutter with replaceable pentagonal non-sharpening plates are considered. The nature of replaceable polyhedral plates wear and the reasons of destruction of cutting parts of the cutter in the conditions of continuous turning with wear-resistant coverings are analyzed. Keywords: cutting tool, pentagonal plates, lubricating and cooling liquids, stability characteristics, wear resistance of the cutter, wear-resistant coatings, hard-to-process materials.

This paper shows the result of some metallographical examinations that have been carried out on low-alloyed Cr-Mo-V heat resistant steel. The aim of this research is to present and compare the advantages and disadvantages of the mainly applied metallographical methods. These techniques are optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, replica method and special applications of these methods. We have proved that using the investigated methods together gives much more information about the lifetime of the specimen than using these techniques particularly.
