Servitisation studies in extant literature contribute to the resource-based view and relational view where industrial organisation view was largely ignored due to the focus on individual manufacturing units. In international business industry, competitiveness is required to enhance the performance of individual organisations. Following post-positivism epistemology, a multi-case study approach has been employed in this study. The unit of analysis is the network consisting of manufacture, supplier and the customer. Two such units of apparel manufacturing industry in Sri Lanka and two units from textile manufacturing industry in Taiwan were selected. This study establishes the link between servitised industry and national competitive advantage. The collaboration with suppliers, indirect competitors and other partners were identified as critical factors to differentiate a business-to-business (B2B) manufacturing industry in an international business.

Human casualties caused by industrial accidents pose a serious threat to corporate management due to the continual strengthening of safety laws as well as changes in the public’s awareness of corporate social responsibility. Accordingly, companies are raising safety awareness among employees by regularly conducting on-site safety activities and training to prevent industrial accidents. However, the safety activities, education, and training of many companies are not carried out voluntarily or in practice by their employees, but mostly through formal implementation. To break away from these customary and passive behaviors and establish a mature safety culture, it is crucial to strengthen the execution capacity of safety management in the field; to this end, we plan to utilize the safety practice index (SPI). The safety practice index (SPI), which quantitatively represents the degree of safety practice, is necessary to increase the effectiveness of safety management for the purpose of preventing accidents. In this study, the correlation was verified by comparing the SPI calculated based on the 2018 and 2019 risk management and the safety activity results of manufacturer A with the reported safety accidents. It was also effective in improving the SPI and reducing safety accidents in 2020 by supplementing the weaknesses of the SPI in 2018 and 2019. According to the results of this study, SPI can be used as an effective indicator for safety accident prevention activities by supplementing weaknesses with strengths through strengthening leadership and safety policies, such as classifying and managing the safety management level of a specific period or department.

Purpose Developing countries engaged in apparel value chain are going global, seeking opportunities to upgrade the industry through providing higher value-added products and services. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how Sri Lankan apparel industry designers interact with the western fashion world in the apparel value chain process, and how they acquire, adapt and apply the knowledge needed to develop high-value fashion products in their fashion design practice. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews conducted with fashion design and product development professionals in the Sri Lankan apparel industry. An inductive thematic analysis is used in identifying participants’ experience of the western fashion world within their fashion design practice. Findings The study proposes a “fashion knowledge bridge” illustrating the ways in which Sri Lankan designers acquire and merge high-value fashion consumer culture and lifestyle knowledge with the manufacturing industry, through multisensory and virtual experience, termed “exposure”, in their interactions with the western fashion world as well as the manufacturing culture of the Sri Lankan apparel industry. Designers’ exposure improves the feasibility and reliability of their apparel products, aligning to the end-consumer needs. The study also proposes a “designers’ exposure framework” that illustrates gains made by the Sri Lankan apparel industry resulting from knowledge enhancement through the designers’ exposure. Research limitations/implications The study is based on a qualitative methodology that has potential subjective biases on the part of the researchers; in this case only the Sri Lankan designers’ perspectives were used in synthesising the findings. Originality/value The findings propose frameworks with theoretical and managerial implications for developing designers’ capabilities in apparel manufacturing countries that seek industrial upgrading through value-added fashion design practice.
