The critical storm is generally carried out to design urban drainage systems and other flood management works starting from the available historical information. Its evaluation associated with a fixed return period is usually obtained by fitting the annual maxima of the rainfall depth with an extreme value distribution. This statistical procedure, however, leads to dubious results when the data present a non-stationarity, induced for example, by a long-term variability. To assess the effects of non-stationarity, four daily rainfall series observed in Italy, with at least 90 years of continuous data, are analysed here. For each record and each year of the observation period, critical design storms are estimated fitting the annual maxima collected in the past, so allowing us to assess the progress of the design storm along time. Four different extreme value distributions are used. The results show that an analysis of non-stationarity is required when urban drainage systems and other hydraulic engineering works are designed.

A large portion of infrastructure was flooded by water running off pavements or overflowing from the drainage systems in Fiji. The main objectives of this study are to identify the most suitable drainage management solution to reduce the overflow of the drainage system in Fiji, and to develop a framework of drainage management systems. The literature review was conducted to identify various drainage systems used to mitigate flooding around the world. After the review, the characteristics of Fiji such as climate pattern, location and soil type were analysed in the case study section. Secondary data which was obtained from Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, the U.S., Korea, and China were used in the research. The characteristics of Fiji were then mapped to other countries and a scoring system was created to analyse the suitability of different flood mitigation techniques in Fiji. Finally, multiple flood management strategies were proposed, and a drainage management framework for flood mitigation was developed.

Stormwater management practices can mitigate the undesirable impacts of urbanization. Urban drainage models can play a significant role in comprehensive evaluation of stormwater management systems. This thesis presents a methodology for the development of a detailed distributed urban drainage model using Geographic Information System (GIS) databases. The approach incorporates delineation of spatial variables (subcatchment outlets, width, slope etc.) and other model inputs from digital data and assigns them to the GIS database by executing developed Python 2.7 scripts. The proposed methodology is applied on a case study area in Mississauga, Ontario. Observed rainfall data are used as model input and simulation is performed using PCSWMM 5.1.1279. The model performance is evaluated by comparing the uncalibrated simulated discharge with the observed one. The simulated hydrographs are of good fit with the observed hydrographs. The evaluation criteria justify the use of extracted and assumed parameters and the reliability of the developed methodology.

Abstract Data collection in urban drainage systems comes with many challenges. However, many examples already exist, containing numerous useful lessons learned. This chapter therefore contains several urban drainage and stormwater management metrology case studies, selected to cover a wide range of scopes, scales, objectives, climates, data validation methods, and data storage approaches. The case studies are initiated by academics as well as by institutions from the water industry.
