ABSTRACT We present spectroscopic confirmation of three new two-image gravitationally lensed quasars, compiled from existing strong lens and X-ray catalogues. Images of HSC J091843.27–022007.5 show a red galaxy with two blue point sources at either side, separated by 2.26 arcsec. This system has a source and a lens redshifts zs = 0.804 and zℓ = 0.459, respectively, as obtained by our follow-up spectroscopic data. CXCO J100201.50+020330.0 shows two point sources separated by 0.85 arcsec on either side of an early-type galaxy. The follow-up spectroscopic data confirm the fainter quasar has the same redshift with the brighter quasar from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) fiber spectrum at zs = 2.016. The deflecting foreground galaxy is a typical early-type galaxy at a redshift of zℓ = 0.439. SDSS J135944.21+012809.8 has two point sources with quasar spectra at the same redshift zs = 1.096, separated by 1.05 arcsec, and fits to the HSC images confirm the presence of a galaxy between these. These discoveries demonstrate the power of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP)’s deep imaging and wide sky coverage. Combined with existing X-ray source catalogues and follow-up spectroscopy, the HSC-SSP provides us unique opportunities to find multiple-image quasars lensed by a foreground galaxy.

Understanding the process of metal enrichment is one of the key problems for our picture of structure formation and evolution, in which early-type galaxies are a crucial ingredient. X-ray observations provide a powerful tool for measuring the metal distributions in their hot ISM, which is shaped by their entire history of star-formation, evolution and feedback. In Fig 1 (left panel), we summarize the results of a Chandra survey of metals in early-type galaxies, supplemented with Suzaku data (Humphrey & Buote 2006, P. Humphrey et al., in prep.). Chandra is particularly suited to this study, as it enables temperature gradients and X-ray point sources to be resolved, mitigating two important sources of bias (e.g., Buote & Fabian 1998; Fabbiano et al. 1994). We found on average that the ISM is at least as metal-rich as the stars, and we did not find the problematical, highly sub-solar, abundances historically reported. The abundance ratios of O, Ne, Mg, Si and S with respect to Fe are similar to the centres of massive groups and clusters, suggesting homology in the enrichment process over a wide mass range. Finally, using high-quality Suzaku data, we were able to resolve, for the first time in a galaxy-scale (≲1013M⊙) object, a radial abundance gradient similar to those seen in some bright galaxy groups (Fig. 1, right panel).

ABSTRACT I report the discovery of a transient broad-Hα point source in the outskirts of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1404, discovered in archival observations taken with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectrograph. The Hα line width of 1950 km s−1 full width at half-maximum, and luminosity of (4.1 ± 0.1) × 1036 erg s−1, are consistent with a nova outburst, and the source is not visible in MUSE data obtained 9 months later. A transient soft X-ray source was detected at the same position (within <1 arcsec), 14 yr before the Hα transient. If the X-ray and Hα emission are from the same object, the source may be a short-time-scale recurrent nova with a massive white dwarf accretor, and hence a possible Type-Ia supernova progenitor. Selecting broad-Hα point sources in MUSE archival observations for a set of nearby early-type galaxies, I discovered 12 more nova candidates with similar properties to the NGC 1404 source, including five in NGC 1380 and four in NGC 4365. Multi-epoch data are available for four of these twelve sources; all four are confirmed to be transient on ∼1 yr time-scales, supporting their identification as novae.

In this paper the problem of the total mass and the total mass-to-light ratio of the early-type galaxy NGC 4649 (M60) is analyzed. Use is made of two independent techniques: the X-ray methodology which is based on the temperature of the X-ray halo of NGC 4649 and the tracer mass estimator (TME) which uses globular clusters (GCs) observed in this galaxy. The mass is calculated in Newtonian and Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) approaches and it is found that inside 3 effective radii (Re ) there is no need for large amounts of dark matter. Beyond 3Re the dark matter starts to play important dynamical role. The possible reasons for the discrepancy between the estimates of the total mass based on X-rays and TME in the outer regions of NGC 4649 are also discussed.
