The study was conducted to develop science module based on project-based learning that is feasible to be implemented in science learning and has potency to build critical thinking skills of junior high school students. The study was Research and Development (RD), modified from Borg Gall steps covering only research and information collecting, planning, preliminary form of product development, expert judgment, product revision, and final product. The subjects were 2 expert lecturers (content expert and media expert) and 2 science teachers of SMP N 1 Wonosari. The types of data were quantitative and qualitative. Data were collected by means of SSP validation sheets and disaster preparedness identification sheets. The techniques of data analysis were descriptive analysis of qualitative and quantitative to 5 grading scale. The result of the study shows that science module is feasible to be implemented in science learning and has potency to build critical thinking skills of junior high school students.

The ability to think critically is one of the highest levels of ability. Developing critical thinking skills in students is still considered important to be improved in schools so that students are able and accustomed to facing various problems around it. This study aims to analyze the critical thinking skills of junior high school students who are in excellent classes and regular classes. This research was conducted in Bandung Barat. In this study students are given a test in the form of questions with critical thinking skills, the problem is used to compare between the superior class and ordinary class. Assessment of the problem using several factors of critical ability include 1) students can not understand the problem correctly, 2) students rush in doing the problem, 3) the students cannot choose the problem-solving strategy correctly and 4) the students work on the problem systematically. Then the matter of critical thinking skills of mathematics is analyzed using quasi-experimental research method to analyze students' critical thinking ability that influence learning result. This study shows the differences in critical thinking ability of junior high school students who are in excellent class and ordinary class. This study shows that superior classes are better in mathematical critical thinking ability than a regular class. The results of this study can add knowledge about critical thinking mathematics junior high school students who are in the class and ordinary class and used to facilitate for educational practitioners in the development of critical mathematical thinking skills.

The purpose of this research is to develop an assessment of exposition text to develop critical thinking for junior high school students. This study utilizes developmental research approach with a procedural development research called Thiargarajan 4D model as its research design. The resulting product is a book consisting exposition text assessment tools to develop critical thinking skills for junior high school students. The structured assessment tools are based on the stage of critical thinking by Peter A Facione and the exposition text written by Mark Anderson and Kathy Anderson. Based on the results of validity and reliability, the assessment tools developed in this study are valid and reliable with more than 80% score. The assessment tools, which were piloted in SMP Hasanuddin 01 Wajak, are proven reliable based on the reliability test between raters.

Keywords: assessment of writing, exposition text, critical thinking

An effective teaching method for cultivating students' critical thinking skills of junior high school students in Indonesia is very necessary as their critical thinking ability is still low. This research is a descriptive study which aimed at cultivating learners' critical thinking by using short-videos since it is believed that technology can motivate the students, increase their interest, engage them to the lesson matter, provide effective learning activities, and demand them to think critically and creatively. The subject in this study were 130 Junior High School students (SMP Negeri 1 Sedayu, Yogyakarta) grade IX. The students were homogeny in term of age, economic, and social background as well as in English language score. Facione's critical thinking rubrics were used to indicate the level of students' critical thinking such as their interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation skill of short video. The average score of all item in pre-test critical thinking skills was at fair level with the score 9 out of 20. The results indicate the students' interpretation skills were fair with the score of 9 out of 20; analytical skill was 12; evaluation skill was 9 out of 20; self-regulation was in fair criterion with the score of 5 out of 10 and good level of explanatory's skill with the score 6 out of 10, while 12 for inferences. It can be concluded that the critical thinking skill of the students of Junior High School was still unsatisfactory as most of them can only reach fair levels. The use of video cannot improve all critical thinking skills. It is recommended more practices for the students.
