AbstractA feasibility study has been performed in order to investigate the performance of the HADES  detector to measure the electromagnetic decays of the hyperon resonances $$\Sigma (1385)^{0}$$ Σ ( 1385 ) 0 ,  $$\Lambda (1405)$$ Λ ( 1405 )   and $$\Lambda (1520)$$ Λ ( 1520 )   as well as the production of double strange baryon systems $$\Xi ^{-}$$ Ξ -  and $$\Lambda $$ Λ $$\Lambda $$ Λ  in p + p reactions at a beam kinetic energy of $$4.5\,{\mathrm{GeV}}$$ 4.5 GeV . The existing HADES  detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. Afterwards the expected signal count rates using a target consisting of either liquid hydrogen or polyethylene are summarized.

We discuss a possible interpretation of the scalar mesons f0(980) and a0(980) as hadronic molecules - bound states of K and [Formula: see text] mesons. Using a phenomenological Lagrangian approach we calculate strong as well as the electromagnetic decay properties of both scalars. The covariant and gauge invariant model, which also allows for finite size effects of the hadronic molecule, delivers results in good agreement with experimental data.

We determine the wavefunctions of electrons bound to a positively charged mesoscopic metallic cluster covered by an insulating surface layer. The radius of the metal core and the thickness of the insulating surface layer are of the order of a couple of Ångström. We study, in particular, the electromagnetic decay of externally located electrons into unoccupied internally located states that exhibit a resonance behavior. This resonance structure has the consequence that the lifetime of the "mesoscopic atoms" may vary by up to six orders of magnitude depending on the values of the parameters (from seconds to years).
