Abstract In these lectures, we give a pedagogical introduction to the superconformal index. This is the writeup of the lectures given at the Winter School “YRISW 2020” and is to appear in a special issue of JPhysA. The lectures are at a basic level and are geared towards a beginning graduate student interested in working with the superconformal index.

Abstract In this study, we introduce the themes of the Special Issue on Art, Creativity and Automation. Sharing 3D Visualization Practices in Archaeology, and present the most important outcomes of a roundtable session involving prominent researchers in the field, organized by the authors during the Archon Winter School in February 2020. By assessing the diversity of research aims, artistic projects, creative practices and technology used in the contributions to the Special Issue, and drawing on the thoughts and perspectives generated during the roundtable discussion, we seek to identify shared challenges within the community of visualizers which could ultimately pave the way to shared practices. In this light, we assess whether established charters and guidelines are still relevant in a now matured digital archaeology, where visualization techniques have attained a central position in archaeological knowledge production. Although parts of the guidelines have become common practice, the remainder did not keep up with the fast pace of development of digital practice and its current fundamental role in archaeology, and as a result some of the guidelines risk becoming obstructive in archaeological creative practice.

The 13th Annual Graduate Research Showcase was held by the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education Graduate Students’ Associations on May 1, 2021. As our first virtual research showcase, graduate student presenters and participants gathered in virtual spaces to celebrate and share our research, and engage in conversation with colleagues. We appreciate and are grateful for the opportunity provided by the Alberta Academic Review to publish a special issue to present the conference proceedings.

This special issue of International Organization looks back on the first fifty years, and especially the last thirty, of this journal. As former editors, we were asked by the editorial board in 1996 to create a special fiftieth anniversary issue. In good academic style, the thought came late and the issue is tardy: you will notice that this is volume 52 of International Organization (founded in 1947). Like many a graduate student over these decades, we hope that the quality of our product will compensate for our long-standing “incomplete.”

When I accepted the invitation to serve as the lead-off speaker for the symposium Managing Bark and Ambrosia Beetles with Semiochemicals on which this special issue is based, I noted that everything one needed to know was published in Seybold et al. (2018), a really good review of the subject. So, I took another course. About 25 years ago, I gave an oral presentation in the form of a letter to an imaginary graduate student. It seemed to go over well, so I decided to do it again. Here is a version of that letter to Sarah, the latest prospective graduate student conjured up by my imagination.

This special issue of Zootaxa is published in honor of Dr. Albino Morimasa Sakakibara from the Universidade Federal do Paraná, Brazil, one of the most prolific living taxonomists of auchenorrhynchan Hemiptera. Dr. Sakakibara is the author of more than 100 scientific articles spanning the years 1968 to 2017. His works have encompassed various fields of biology including natural history, comparative morphology, phylogenetics, and taxonomy treating approximately 60 genera of treehoppers, leafhoppers, and spittlebugs. His outstanding record of contributions to our field also includes an extensive and successful history of graduate student training—twelve taxonomists currently working on several insect groups—along with thorough curation of the insect collection at his home institution, now constituting inarguably the most comprehensive holdings of Auchenorrhyncha in Brazil.
