Zilpha Drew Smith (1852–1926) was a social worker who devised a systematic approach to screening and investigating relief applications by using friendly visitors. In 1904 became associate director of the Boston School of Social Work.

Bertha Capen Reynolds (1885–1978), social worker, educator, Marxist, and activist, advocated for the working class and oppressed groups. She was associate director of Smith College School for Social Work (1925–1938), but was asked to leave because of her union activities.

In 1898 Mrs. Lothrop entered the Associated Charities of Boston as worker in training; 1900-3, district secretary in the Associated Charities; 1902, summer course in the New York School of Philanthropy; 1903-13, general secretary of the Associated Charities of Boston; 1904-20, lecturer and special assistant in the Boston School of Social Work; 1906, relief work after the San Francisco fire; 1908, relief work after the Chelsea fire; 1910-11, aided in the formation of the National Association of Societies for Organizing Charity; 1913, resigned as general secretary of the Boston society to be married, and was made one of its directors; 1914, relief work after the Salem fire; 1914-20, chairman of the American Association for Organizing Charity, later changed to “Organizing Family Social Work”; 1917, secretary of the Plan and Scope Committee of the Boston Metropolitan Chapter, American Red Cross; 1917, Red Cross relief work after the Halifax explosion; 1917-19, Director of Civilian Relief in the New England Division of the American Red Cross.

In social work practice, keeping records of encounters with clients is a routinized practice for documenting cases. This paper focuses on the specific task of obtaining the prospective clients’ correct address for filling in a standardized personal report form. My analysis focuses in the way both the client(s) and the social worker cooperatively orient to the practice of writing addresses, showing how this apparently simple task is multimodally implemented within interaction, and how it can generate some complications and expansions. A special focus will be devoted to difficulties encountered by clients to give their address in an adequate way, as well as to the transformation of this activity from an individual to a collective task.

This article describes and analyzes the development and implementation of a 5-year BSW–MSW program at a Midwestern school of social work. Key pedagogical and programmatic considerations in the development of such programs are identified. Specific information about the admission process and curricular pathway is provided. Five-year and traditional MSW students are compared on their performance in foundation-level MSW courses. The results of evaluative surveys of faculty members and 5-year students are also presented. The potential role of 5-year programs in social work education is discussed.
