Background: Ependymomas are rare tumors originating from neuroepithelial cells lining the wall of the ventricles or central canal of the spinal cord. While these tumors mainly occur within the central nervous system (CNS), there are occasional reports in children and young adult patients with a primary tumor occurrence outside of the CNS. Ependymomas of the sacrococcygeal region have been infrequently described in the literature with no standard of care established. We present a case report and review of the literature regarding this rare entity. Case Description: A 24-year-old woman presented with right gluteal pain worsened by sitting and a palpable soft tissue mass of the sacrococcygeal region. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 3.7 cm cystic mass centered in the right gluteal region. She underwent a biopsy at an outside institution, with histology revealing myxopapillary ependymoma. The patient was referred to our hospital and underwent an interdisciplinary neurosurgical and orthopedic oncology en bloc resection of the ependymoma, which intraoperatively appeared to originate from the coccygeal nerve. Conclusion: In the present report, the authors demonstrate that a myxopapillary ependymoma may present as an isolated gluteal mass attached to the coccygeal nerve, without frank CNS involvement. Furthermore, an interdisciplinary approach to surgical resection of this lesion appears to represent an effective treatment modality.

Introduction: Cellulite is a multifactorial subcutaneous connective tissue disorder that compromises the structure of adipose tissue and can manifest in varying degrees. It causes both unsightly and health changes; thus, requiring specialist treatment. Objective: This works aims at showing the effectiveness of treatments using subcision and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) filling to treat and correct cellulite irregularities in grades three and four in the gluteal region. Methodology: This is a retrospective study of patients who underwent two different techniques for the treatment of cellulite grades three and four. Four patients were subjected to treatment in the gluteal region to correct irregularities from cellulite in the most advanced grades, being used both the subcision and the PMMA filling techniques. Report: Case report of four patients with follow-up treatment for cellulite grades three and four with subcision and polymethyl methacrylate filling. Conclusion: Results were considered efficient due to satisfactorily correcting all cases of cellulite grades three and four.

A 26 year old man with a painful left gluteal mass was found to have parachordoma. It had been noted 5 months prior to the time of the examination. Physical examination revealed diffuse swelling with elastic consistency and ill-defined margins. The tumor mass was measured as being 12 x 10 cm. An incisional biopsy was performed and diagnosed as parachordoma by histopathological examination.TAJ 2009; 22(1): 269-271

Incidence of broken hypodermic needle in patients has been decreased because of superior manufacturing techniques. Breaking of hypodermic needle after intramuscular injection has been rarely reported. We report a case of broken needle in the gluteal region in a 36 years old woman following an intramuscular injection. Patient arrived in the emergency after 2 days of the episode. Patient was taken for surgery for removal of the needle. Initially attempts for removal of needle were made without use of image intensifier under local anaesthesia, but it failed as it was very difficult to locate the needle. Patient was taken up for surgery under spinal anaesthesia with the use of image intensifier. Broken needle was located and removed. The following case describes the management of broken hypodermic needle and suggests valuable guidelines for minimising the chances of undue complications arising due to needle migration.

A case of gluteal lipoma treated at the Department of Surgery of the Hospital Clínico de la Universidad Mayor, Temuco, Chile is presented. The patient, a 42-year-old man, presented with a multilobulated tumor of soft parts located in the left gluteal region. The tumor was painless and was 22 cm in diameter. Complete exeresis of the lesion was performed. This was sent to histopathological examination, which confirmed the preoperative diagnosis of lipoma. The outcome was favorable, with no morbidity. The tomographic control at the second year of postoperative allowed us to verify the absence of recurrence.
