A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped and pinkish-yellow bacterium, which was motile by gliding and designated strain THG–T11T, was isolated from tomato rhizosphere soil in Gyeonggi province, Republic of Korea. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, strain THG-T11T was found to be most closely related to ‘Pedobacter zeaxanthinifaciens’ TDMA-5 (95.9 % sequence similarity), Pedobacter agri PB92T (94.9 %), Pedobacter rhizosphaerae 01-96T (94.6 %) and Pedobacter alluvionis NWER-II11T (94.5 %). The DNA G+C content was 38.4 mol%. The only isoprenoid quinone detected in strain THG-T11T was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The major component in the polyamine pattern was sym-homospermidine. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified phosphoglycolipid, an unidentified glycolipid, an unidentified lipid, unidentified aminophospholipids and unidentified aminolipids. The major ceramide was found to be ceramide phosphorylethanolamine. The major fatty acids were identified as iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and C16 : 0. These data support the affiliation of strain THG-T11T to the genus Pedobacter . Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analysis, it is proposed that strain THG-T11T represents a novel species of the genus Pedobacter for which the name Pedobacter ureilyticus sp. nov. is proposed, with THG-T11T as the type strain ( = KACC 17660T = JCM 19461T).

A novel Gram-negative bacterium, designated G2-14T, was isolated from rhizosphere soil sample collected from apple orchard in Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Republic of Korea. Strain G2-14T was a strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile and short-rod-shaped bacterium. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain G2-14T was closely related to Mucilaginibacter myungsuensis HMD1056T (96.9 %) and Mucilaginibacter boryungensis BDR-9T (96.8 %). The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) of strain G2-14T were summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω6с and/or C16:1 ω7с) and iso-C15:0. The predominant quinone and the major polar lipid were menaquinone-7 and phosphatidylethanolamine, respectively. Strain G2-14T produced acetic acid. The DNA G+C content based on whole genome sequences was 46.4 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain G2-14T represents a novel species in the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter mali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is G2-14T (=KCTC 72533T=NBRC 114179T).

A Gram-stain negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain THG-A13T, was isolated from Aglaia odorata rhizosphere soil in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, strain THG-A13T had close similarity with Lysobacter niabensis GH34-4T (98.5 %), Lysobacter oryzae YC6269T (97.9 %) and Lysobacter yangpyeongensis GH19-3T (97.3 %). Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain THG-A13T possesses ubiquinone-8 (Q8) as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1ω9c as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol) and diphosphatidylglycerol. The G+C content was 66.3 mol%. The DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain THG-A13T and its closest phylogenetic neighbours were below 18.0 %. These data corroborated the affiliation of strain THG-A13T to the genus Lysobacter . These data suggest that the isolate represents a novel species for which the name Lysobacter terrae sp. nov. is proposed, with THG-A13T as the type strain ( = KACC 17646T = JCM 19613T).

A non-sporulating, non-motile, catalase- and oxidase-positive, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated BA-3T, was isolated from activated sludge of a wastewater treatment facility. The strain was able to degrade about 95 % of 100 mg 3-phenoxybenzoic acid l−1 within 2 days of incubation. Growth occurred in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl [optimum, 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl], at pH 5.5–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and at 10–37 °C (optimum, 28 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain BA-3T was a member of the genus Sphingobium ; it showed highest gene sequence similarity to Sphingobium qiguonii X23T (98.2 %), and similarities of <97.0 % with strains of other Sphingobium species. The polar lipid pattern, the presence of spermidine and ubiquinone Q-10, the predominance of summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c) in the cellular fatty acid profile and the DNA G+C content also supported affiliation of the isolate to the genus Sphingobium . Strain BA-3T showed low DNA–DNA relatedness values (21.3±0.8 %) with Sphingobium qiguonii X23T. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain BA-3T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingobium , for which the name Sphingobium jiangsuense sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is BA-3T ( = CCTCC AB 2010217T = KCTC 23196T = KACC 16433T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-dht8T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch) and characterized using a polyphasic approach. The organism was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of the genus Nonomuraea . The G+C content of the DNA was 68.47 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies, strain NEAU-dht8T was most closely related to Nonomuraea maheshkhaliensis 16-5-14T (99.31 %), Nonomuraea kuesteri GW 14-1925T (98.77 %), Nonomuraea coxensis JCM 13931T (98.71 %), Nonomuraea wenchangensis 210417T (98.44 %), Nonomuraea bangladeshensis 5-10-10T (98.36 %) and Nonomuraea salmonea DSM 43678T (98.0 %); similarities to other species of the genus Nonomuraea were lower than 98 %. Two tree-making algorithms based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a phyletic line with its closest neighbour N. maheshkhaliensis 16-5-14T. However, the low level of DNA–DNA relatedness allowed the novel isolate to be differentiated from N. maheshkhaliensis 16-5-14T. Strain NEAU-dht8T could also be differentiated from other species of the genus Nonomuraea showing high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (98–98.77 %) by morphological and physiological characteristics. Thus, strain NEAU-dht8T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nonomuraea , for which the name Nonomuraea fuscirosea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-dht8T ( = CGMCC 4.7104T = DSM 45880T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and heterotrophic bacterial strain, designed strain D1T, was isolated from a recirculating mariculture system in Tianjin, China. Its taxonomic position was determined using a polyphasic approach. Cells of strain D1T were non-flagellated short rods, 0.3–0.5 µm wide and 0.5–1.0 µm long. Growth was observed at 15–30 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 5.5–9.0 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.0) and in the presence of 1–8 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2–3 %). Cells contained carotenoid pigments but not flexirubin-type pigments. Strain D1T contained MK-6 as the sole menaquinone and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) as the sole phospholipid and four unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0 (23.2 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (15.2 %), C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c (14.3 %), iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (13.5 %) and iso-C15 : 1 G (10.8 %). 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses indicated that strain D1T belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed closest phylogenetic relationship to the genus Lutibacter , with highest sequence similarity to Lutibacter aestuarii MA-My1T (92.2 %). The DNA G+C content of strain D1T was 35.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain D1T was considered to represent a novel species in a new genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Wenyingzhuangia marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is D1T ( = CGMCC 1.12162T = JCM 18494T).

A strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-positive actinobacterial strain was isolated from a rhizosphere soil of a wild plant (Peucedanum japonicum Thumb.) collected on Mara Island, Jeju, Republic of Korea. Cells of strain RS-50T were oxidase-negative, catalase-positive, short rods and motile by means of a polar flagellum; the colonies were orange, circular, smooth and convex. meso-Diaminopimelic acid and glucose were the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell wall and the whole-cell sugar, respectively. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, two unknown phospholipids and an unknown lipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 73.6 mol%. In 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic trees, strain RS-50T formed a tight cluster with Angustibacter luteus (99.2 % sequence similarity); both were loosely related to the suborders Kineosporiineae and Micrococcineae . The DNA–DNA relatedness value of the isolate to A. luteus KACC 14249T was 22.3±0.9 %. On the basis of the results of phenotypic analyses and DNA–DNA hybridization experiments, strain RS-50T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Angustibacter , for which the name Angustibacter peucedani sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RS-50T ( = KCTC 19628T = DSM 45329T). The description of the genus Angustibacter is emended.

A Gram-positive, oxidase- and catalase-positive, strictly aerobic and motile bacterium, designated WS 4626T, was isolated from a medical practice. Spherical endospores were formed terminally in swollen rods. The genomic DNA G+C content was 37.1 mol%. Cells contained iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω10c, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 as the predominant cellular fatty acids and MK-7 and MK-6 as the major isoprenoid quinones. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol, the cell-wall peptidoglycan was type A4α, l-Lys-d-Asp and the major cell-wall sugar was xylose. The closest phylogenetic relatives were Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus XDB9T (96.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Lysinibacillus odysseyi 34hs-1T (96.5 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between the isolate and L. odysseyi DSM 18869T was very low (6 %). On the basis of the data presented, strain WS 4626T represents a novel species of the genus Lysinibacillus , for which the name Lysinibacillus meyeri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WS 4626T ( = DSM 25057T = LMG 26643T).

Strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were isolated from the caecal content of a chicken and produced butyric, lactic and formic acids as major metabolic end products. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427 were 40.4 and 38.8 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, both strains were most closely related to the generically misclassified Streptococcus pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. Strain LMG 27428T could be distinguished from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T based on production of more lactic acid and less formic acid in M2GSC medium, a higher DNA G+C content and the absence of activities of acid phosphatase and leucine, arginine, leucyl glycine, pyroglutamic acid, glycine and histidine arylamidases, while strain LMG 27428 was biochemically indistinguishable from S. pleomorphus ATCC 29734T. The novel genus Faecalicoccus gen. nov. within the family Erysipelotrichaceae is proposed to accommodate strains LMG 27428T and LMG 27427. Strain LMG 27428T ( = DSM 26963T) is the type strain of Faecalicoccus acidiformans sp. nov., and strain LMG 27427 ( = DSM 26962) is a strain of Faecalicoccus pleomorphus comb. nov. (type strain LMG 17756T = ATCC 29734T = DSM 20574T). Furthermore, the nearest phylogenetic neighbours of the genus Faecalicoccus are the generically misclassified Eubacterium cylindroides DSM 3983T (94.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T) and Eubacterium biforme DSM 3989T (92.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to strain LMG 27428T). We present genotypic and phenotypic data that allow the differentiation of each of these taxa and propose to reclassify these generically misnamed species of the genus Eubacterium formally as Faecalitalea cylindroides gen. nov., comb. nov. and Holdemanella biformis gen. nov., comb. nov., respectively. The type strain of Faecalitalea cylindroides is DSM 3983T = ATCC 27803T = JCM 10261T and that of Holdemanella biformis is DSM 3989T = ATCC 27806T = CCUG 28091T.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, strain SC13E-S71T, was isolated from tuff, volcanic rock, where the Roman catacombs of Saint Callixtus in Rome, Italy, was excavated. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SC13E-S71T belongs to the genus Sphingopyxis , and that it shows the greatest sequence similarity with Sphingopyxis chilensis DSM 14889T (98.72 %), Sphingopyxis taejonensis DSM 15583T (98.65 %), Sphingopyxis ginsengisoli LMG 23390T (98.16 %), Sphingopyxis panaciterrae KCTC 12580T (98.09 %), Sphingopyxis alaskensis DSM 13593T (98.09 %), Sphingopyxis witflariensis DSM 14551T (98.09 %), Sphingopyxis bauzanensis DSM 22271T (98.02 %), Sphingopyxis granuli KCTC 12209T (97.73 %), Sphingopyxis macrogoltabida KACC 10927T (97.49 %), Sphingopyxis ummariensis DSM 24316T (97.37 %) and Sphingopyxis panaciterrulae KCTC 22112T (97.09 %). The predominant fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), C14 : 0 2-OH and C16 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-10. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and sphingoglycolipid. These chemotaxonomic data are common to members of the genus Sphingopyxis . However, a polyphasic approach using physiological tests, DNA base ratios, DNA–DNA hybridization and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the isolate SC13E-S71T belongs to a novel species within the genus Sphingopyxis , for which the name Sphingopyxis italica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SC13E-S71T ( = DSM 25229T = CECT 8016T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, brick red-pigmented bacterium, designated R-22-1 c-1T, was isolated from water from Baiyang Lake, Hebei Province, PR China. The strain was able to grow at 20–30 °C (optimum, 30 °C) and pH 6–7 (optimum, pH 6) in Reasoner’s 2A medium. 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenetic analyses of R-22-1 c-1T revealed closest relationships to Rufibacter immobilis MCC P1T (97.8 %), Rufibacter sediminis H-1T (97.9 %) and Rufibacter glacialis MDT1-10-3T (97.0 %), with other species of the genus Rufibacter showing less than 97.0 % sequence similarity. The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids and three unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C15 : 1  ω6c, C17 : 1  ω6c, anteiso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c) and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1B). The respiratory quinone was MK-7. The draft genome of R-22-1 c-1T was 5.6 Mbp in size, with a G+C content of 50.2 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain R-22-1 c-1T and related type strains were R. immobilis MCC P1T (77.2 and 21.8 %), R. sediminis H-1T (81.6 and 21.4 %) and R. tibetensis 1351T (78.5 and 22.9 %). Based on these phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic results, strain R-22-1 c-1T represents a novel species in the genus Rufibacter , for which the name Rufibacter latericius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R-22-1 c-1T (=CGMCC 1.13570T=KCTC 62781T).
