A Gram-positive-staining, aerobic, moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain Y32T, was isolated from subsurface soil of the Sanwei salt field, Yancheng, Jiangsu province, South-east China. The cell-wall peptidoglycan type of strain Y32T was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The menaquinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 and the DNA G+C content of strain Y32T was 40.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Y32T was closely related to the type strains of the genus Pontibacillus. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of strain Y32T with the type strains of species of the genus Pontibacillus were 97.8 % (Pontibacillus marinus KCTC 3917T), 96.9 % (Pontibacillus chungwhensis BH030062T), 96.8 % (Pontibacillus litoralis JSM 072002T) and 96.0 % (Pontibacillus halophilus JSM 076056T). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain Y32T and P. marinus KCTC 3917T was 42 %. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidences, strain Y32T was found to be affiliated to the genus Pontibacillus, but was clearly differentiated from other members of this genus. Strain Y32T represents a novel member of the genus, for which the name Pontibacillus yanchengensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Y32T ( = CGMCC 1.10680T = CCTCC AB209311T = NRRL B-59408T).

A moderately halophilic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium (BH030004T) was isolated from a solar saltern in Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BH030004T belonged to the genus Pontibacillus. Chemotaxonomic data (DNA G+C content, 42 mol%; major isoprenoid quinone, MK-7; cell-wall type, A1γ-type meso-diaminopimelic acid; major fatty acids, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0) also supported the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Pontibacillus. Although the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain BH030004T and Pontibacillus chungwhensis DSM 16287T was relatively high (99·1 %), physiological properties and DNA–DNA hybridization (about 7 % DNA–DNA relatedness) allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain BH030004T from the type strain of P. chungwhensis. Therefore, strain BH030004T represents a novel species of the genus Pontibacillus, for which the name Pontibacillus marinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH030004T (=KCTC 3917T=DSM 16465T).

An aerobic, spore-forming, moderately halophilic bacterium, strain BH260T, was isolated from a salt lake in China. Cells of this strain were found to be motile rods with flagella. The organism grew optimally at 30–32 °C and pH 8·0 in the presence of 12–15 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a clade with the type strains of the genus Lentibacillus. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity for strain BH260T with respect to Lentibacillus salsus KCTC 3911T, Lentibacillus juripiscarius JCM 12147T and Lentibacillus salicampi KCCM 41560T were 96·0, 95·5 and 95·3 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (a DNA G+C content of 44 mol%; MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone; A1γ-meso-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall type; phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids; anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids) also supported assignment of the isolate to the genus Lentibacillus. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus lacisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH260T (=KCTC 3915T=DSM 16462T).

A moderately halophilic bacterium, strain SS20T, capable of growing at salinities of 1–20 % (w/v) NaCl was isolated from a solar saltern of the Dangjin area in Korea and was characterized taxonomically. Strain SS20T was a Gram-negative bacterium comprising motile, short rods. Its major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c, C19 : 0 ω8c cyclo and C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 70 mol% and the predominant ubiquinone was Q-9. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SS20T belonged to the genus Halomonas. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of Halomonas species were in the range 93·0–97·5 %. The levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain SS20T and the type strains of phylogenetically closely related Halomonas species were in the range 5·3–12·3 %. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, strain SS20T represents a novel species of the genus Halomonas, for which the name Halomonas koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SS20T (=KCTC 12127T=JCM 12237T).

A Gram-staining-positive, moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain Amb31T, was isolated from water of the hypersaline lake Aran-Bidgol in Iran and characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. Cells were rods, motile and able to produce ellipsoidal endospores at a central position in swollen sporangia. Strain Amb31T was facultatively anaerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The strain grew in a complex medium supplemented with 3–25 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 7.5–10 %). Optimal growth was at 30–35 °C and pH 7.5. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that strain Amb31T belonged to the genus Lentibacillus; it exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 96.8 and 96.4 % to Lentibacillus salicampi SF-20T and Lentibacillus salinarum AHS-1T, respectively, and values of 95.9–94.7 % to the type strains of other recognized species of Lentibacillus. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain Amb31T was based on meso-diaminopimelic acid and MK-7 was the respiratory isoprenoid quinone. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (44.7 %), iso-C16 : 0 (21.4 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (15.9 %) and the polar lipid pattern consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, five phospholipids and a glycolipid. The DNA G+C content was 44.1 mol%. All these features confirmed the placement of strain Amb31T within the genus Lentibacillus and the strain could be clearly differentiated from strains of the other species of Lentibacillus on the basis of several phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic features. DNA–DNA relatedness with the type strain of the most closely related strain, L. salicampi DSM 16425T, was 28 %. Therefore, strain Amb31T represents a novel species of the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus persicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Amb31T (=CCM 7683T =CECT 7524T =DSM 22530T =LMG 25304T).

A moderately halophilic bacterium, strain BH169T, capable of growing at salinities of 3–20 % (w/v) NaCl was isolated from a saline lake in China. Strain BH169T was strictly aerobic, short-rod-shaped and non-motile (non-flagellated). Its major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was about 43 mol% and the predominant quinone was MK-7. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A1γ type, containing meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a distinct phylogenetic line within the spore-forming rods of the genus Bacillus. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of Bacillus species were below 93 %. On the basis of phenotypic and molecular properties, strain BH169T (=KCTC 3912T=DSM 16461T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus salarius sp. nov. is proposed.

A marine, Gram-negative, aerobic, motile, straight-rod-shaped, moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain DD-M3T, was isolated from sea sand in Pohang, Korea. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain fell within the evolutionary radiation encompassed by the genus Marinobacter. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the novel strain and the type strains of recognized Marinobacter species ranged from 94.2 to 97.6 %, the highest values being with Marinobacter flavimaris SW-145T (97.6 %) and Marinobacter lipolyticus SM19T (96.8 %). The values for DNA–DNA relatedness between isolate DD-M3T and the type strains of the most closely related species, M. flavimaris and M. lipolyticus, were 41 and 36 %, respectively. Strain DD-M3T was characterized as having Q-9 as the predominant respiratory quinone and 16 : 0, summed feature 3 and 18 : 1ω9c as the main fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 54.1 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, DD-M3T represents a novel species of the genus Marinobacter, for which the name Marinobacter koreensis sp. nov. is proposed, with DD-M3T (=KACC 11513T=DSM 17924T) as the type strain.

Three Gram-positive, moderately halophilic bacteria, designated YI7-61T, IA7 and DB2, were isolated from sediments of Aiding salt lake in the Xinjiang region of China. Cells of the strains were rod-shaped, motile by means of peritrichous flagella and produced ellipsoidal spores. Colonies were pale yellow in colour. The strains grew optimally at 30–37 °C, pH 6–7 and 3–7 % (w/v) NaCl. The diamino acid in the murein was meso-diaminopimelic acid and the major quinone system was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 44.6–45.0 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strains YI7-61T, IA7 and DB2 were closely related to members of the genus Terribacillus and showed 96.8–97.6, 96.4–97.2 and 95.4–95.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Terribacillus halophilus 002-051T, Terribacillus saccharophilus RB589 and Terribacillus goriensis CL-GR16T, respectively. DNA–DNA relatedness among the isolates was 88–92 % and strain YI7-61T shared 24, 18 and 18 % DNA–DNA relatedness with T. halophilus JCM 21760T, T. saccharophilus JCM 21759T and T. goriensis DSM 18252T, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, the three isolates should be placed in the genus Terribacillus as representatives of a novel species, for which the name Terribacillus aidingensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YI7-61T (=CGMCC 1.8913T =NBRC 105790T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, short rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium, strain A-1T, was isolated from a saline soil contaminated with crude oil in Xianhe, Shangdong Province, China. Strain A-1T formed yellow colonies, was moderately halophilic and grew with 0.05–27.5 % (w/v) total salts (optimum 5–8 %), at 10–42 °C (optimum 30 °C) and at pH 5.5–9.0 (optimum pH 7.2). The dominant fatty acids (>5 %) were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C18 : 1ω7c, C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and C12 : 0 3-OH and the predominant ubiquinone was Q-9. The genomic DNA G+C content was 67.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain A-1T belonged to the genus Halomonas in the class Gammaproteobacteria. The closest relatives were Halomonas lutea YIM 91125T (97.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), H. muralis LMG 20969T (95.6 %), H. pantelleriensis AAPT (95.5 %) and H. kribbensis BH843T (95.2 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain A-1T and H. lutea CCTCC AB 206093T was 27±3 %. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic features, strain A-1T should be placed in the genus Halomonas as a representative of a novel species. The name Halomonas xianhensis sp. nov. is proposed, with strain A-1T ( = CGMCC 1.6848T  = JCM 14849T) as the type strain.

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, moderately halophilic bacterial strain, NEAU-ST10-40T, was isolated from a saline and alkaline soil in Anda City, China. It was strictly aerobic, rod-shaped and motile by peritrichous flagella. It formed light yellow colonies and grew at NaCl concentrations of 3–15 % (w/v) (optimum, 8 %, w/v), at pH 7.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 8.0) and at 4–60 °C (optimum, 30 °C). It contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that it belonged to the genus Halobacillus. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain NEAU-ST10-40T and the type strains of related species of the genus Halobacillus ranged from 98.8 % (Halobacillus alkaliphilus FP5T) to 97.1 % (Halobacillus kuroshimensis IS-Hb7T). DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain NEAU-ST10-40T and H. alkaliphilus DSM 18525T, Halobacillus campisalis KCTC 13144T, Halobacillus yeomjeoni DSM 17110T, Halobacillus halophilus DSM 2266T, Halobacillus litoralis DSM 10405T, Halobacillus dabanensis DSM 18199T, Halobacillus salinus DSM 18897T, Halobacillus naozhouensis DSM 21183T, Halobacillus trueperi DSM 10404T and Halobacillus salsuginis DSM 21185T were from 43 ± 1 to 19 ± 1 % (mean ± sd). The DNA G+C content was 39.3 mol%. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:0 and iso-C16:0, the only respiratory quinone detected was MK-7, and polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two unknown phospholipids and three unknown lipids. On the basis of the data presented, strain NEAU-ST10-40T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Halobacillus andaensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-ST10-40T ( = CGMCC 1.12153T = DSM 25866T).

Two Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming and moderately halophilic bacteria (strains 28-1T, 28-4), isolated from a soil sample from a neutral salt lake in Xin-Jiang, China, were characterized polyphasically. On the basis of fasta (ungapped) analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences, strains 28-1T and 28-4 were shown to belong to the Bacillaceae and to be closely related to Filobacillus milensis DSM 13259T (97·0 %) and Bacillus haloalkaliphilus DSM 5271T (95·7 %). 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with other recognized species was not more than 94·1 %. Phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical data supported the differentiation of these novel strains from F. milensis and B. haloalkaliphilus. Therefore these two previously unidentified strains are considered to represent a new genus and species, for which the name Tenuibacillus multivorans gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 28-1T (=AS 1.3442T=NBRC 100370T).
