A novel actinobacterium, designated strain NEAU-yn17T, was isolated from a soil sample collected at the wastewater discharge site of a pesticide factory in Harbin, northern China, and characterized using a polyphasic approach. Morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of strain NEAU-yn17T were consistent with the description of the genus Saccharothrix , such as the spore arrangement, the diamino acid of the peptidoglycan, the whole-cell hydrolysates, the predominant menaquinone and the phospholipid profile. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that strain NEAU-yn17T should also be classified in the genus Saccharothrix , with Saccharothrix saharensis DSM 45456T (99.52 % sequence similarity) and Saccharothrix xinjiangensis JCM 12329T (99.04 %) as the nearest phylogenetic relatives. A combination of DNA–DNA hybridization results and some phenotypic characteristics indicated that strain NEAU-yn17T can be distinguished from its closest relatives. Therefore, strain NEAU-yn17T represents a novel species of the genus Saccharothrix , for which the name Saccharothrix carnea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-yn17T ( = CGMCC 4.7097T = DSM 45878T).

Four Gram-staining-positive, catalase-negative, coccoid isolates, designated NTUH_1465T, NTUH_2196, NTUH_4957 and NTUH_5572T, were isolated from human specimens. The four isolates displayed more than 99.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Gemella haemolysans ATCC 10379T, and 96.7 to 98.6 % similarity with Gemella sanguinis ATCC 700632T, Gemella morbillorum ATCC 27824T or Gemella cuniculi CCUG 42726T. However, phylogenetic analysis of concatenated sequences of three housekeeping genes, groEL, rpoB and recA, suggested that the four isolates were distinct from G. haemolysans ATCC 10379T and other species. Isolates NTUH_2196, NTUH_4957 and NTUH_5572T clustered together and formed a stable monophyletic clade. DNA–DNA hybridization values among strains NTUH_1465T and NTUH_5572T and their phylogenetically related neighbours were all lower than 49 %. The four isolates could be distinguished from G. haemolysans and other species by phenotypic characteristics. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic results, two novel species Gemella parahaemolysans sp. nov. (type strain NTUH_1465T = BCRC 80365T = JCM 18067T) and Gemella taiwanensis sp. nov. (type strain NTUH_5572T = BCRC 80366T = JCM 18066T) are proposed.

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain NN258T, was isolated from a cave soil sample collected from a karst cave at Khao No-Khao Kaeo, Nakhon Sawan province, Thailand. The morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics were consistent with its classification in the genus Nonomuraea . Strain NN258T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values to Nonomuraea candida HMC10T, Nonomuraea mesophila 6K102T, Nonomuraea rubra DSM 43768T, Nonomuraea diastatica KC712T and Nonomuraea helvata IFO 14681T. The strain formed an extensively branched substrate and aerial mycelia. The whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, with glucose, madurose, mannose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphotidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxy-phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, hydroxy-phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, two unidentified phospholipids, three unidentified sugar-containing phosphoaminolipids, an unidentified glycolipid and two unidentified lipids. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4), with minor amounts of MK-9(H0), MK-9(H2) and MK-9(H6). Major cellular fatty acids (>10%) were iso-C16 : 0 and 10-methyl-C17 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.0 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain NN258T and the reference strains were 79.9–80.9 % and 26.1–27.0 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain NN258T represents a novel species of the genus Nonomuraea , for which the name Nonomuraea antri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NN258T (=TBRC 11478T=NBRC 114269T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive actinobacterium, designated H25-14T, was isolated from a sea sediment sample, and its taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic approach. The peptidoglycan type of strain H25-14T was A4α and lysine was the diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4) and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 73.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain H25-14T was closely related to Paraoerskovia marina NBRC 104352T (98.3 %). However, DNA–DNA hybridization data and phenotypic characteristics revealed that strain H25-14T differed from P. marina NBRC 104352T. Therefore, strain H25-14T represents a novel species of the genus Paraoerskovia , for which the name Paraoerskovia sediminicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H25-14T ( = NBRC 108565T = DSM 25477T). An emended description of the genus Paraoerskovia is also proposed.

A novel Gram-stain-positive actinobacterium, designated PS-14-7T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of a mangrove on Pramuka Island, Indonesia, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The peptidoglycan type of strain PS-14-7T was A4α and lysine was the diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4) and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 72.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain PS-14-7T was closely related to Serinibacter salmoneus Kis4-28T (99.6 %). However, DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic characteristics revealed that strain PS-14-7T differed from Serinibacter salmoneus . Therefore, strain PS-14-7T represents a novel species of the genus Serinibacter , for which the name Serinibacter tropicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PS-14-7T ( = NBRC 110108T = InaCC A 515T). An emended description of the genus Serinibacter is also proposed.

Strain HNM0947T, representing a novel actinobacterium, was isolated from the coral Galaxea astreata collected from the coast of Wenchang, Hainan, China. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics consistent with the genus Nocardiopsis . The organism formed abundant fragmented substrate mycelia and aerial mycelia which differentiated into non-motile, rod-shaped spores. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and no diagnostic sugars. The major menaquinones were MK-10(H8), MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H4). The major phospholipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The major fatty acids were iso-C16:0, anteiso-C17:0, C18:0, C18:0 10-methyl (TBSA) and anteiso-C15:0. The G+C content was 71.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HNM0947T belonged to the genus Nocardiopsis and shared highest sequence similarity to Nocardiopsis salina YIM 90010T (98.8%), Nocardiopsis xinjiangensis YIM 90004T(98.5%) and Nocardiopsis kunsanensis DSM 44524T (98.3%). The strain HNM0947T was distinguished from its closest type strain by low average nucleotide identity (90.8%) and dDDH values (60.4%) respectively. Based on genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics, it was concluded that strain HNM0947T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardiopsis whose name was proposed as Nocardiopsis coralli sp. nov. The type strain was HNM0947T (=CCTCC AA 2020015 T=KCTC 49525 T).

A facultatively alkaliphilic actinomycete strain, designated EGI 80088T, was isolated from a saline-alkali soil sample from Xinjiang province, north-west China, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic characterization. Strain EGI 80088T formed fragmented aerial hyphae and short spore chains, and rod-like spores aggregated at maturity. Whole-cell hydrolysates of the isolate contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and glucosamine, mannose, galactose, glucose and rhamnose as the marker sugars. The major fatty acids identified (>5 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1I/anteiso-C17 : 1B), iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain EGI 80088T was 70.6 mol%. EGI 80088T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to its closest phylogenetic neighbour Haloactinopolyspora alba YIM 93246T (98.5 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness value of the strain EGI 80088T and H. alba YIM 93246T was 59.3±5.2 %. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization data, strain EGI 80088T represents a novel species of the genus Haloactinopolyspora , for which the name Haloactinopolyspora alkaliphila sp. nov. (type strain EGI 80088T = BCRC 16946T = JCM 19128T) is proposed. The description of the genus Haloactinopolyspora has also been emended.

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated and designated strain L6-8T during a study of endophytic bacterial communities in lesser duckweed (Lemna aequinoctialis). Cells of strain L6-8T were motile with peritrichous flagella. The analysis of the nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain L6-8T was phylogenetically related to species of the genus Rhizobium . Its closest relatives were Rhizobium borbori DN316T (97.6 %), Rhizobium oryzae Alt 505T (97.3 %) and Rhizobium pseudoryzae J3-A127T (97.0 %). The sequence similarity analysis of housekeeping genes recA, glnII, atpD and gyrB showed low levels of sequence similarity (<91.5 %) between strain L6-8T and other species of the genus Rhizobium with validly published names. The pH range for growth was 4.0–9.0 (optimum 6.0–7.0), and the temperature range for growth was 20–45 °C (optimum 30 °C). Strain L6-8T tolerated NaCl up to 2 % (w/v) (optimum 1 % NaCl). The predominant components of cellular fatty acids were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c (31.32 %), summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c; 25.39 %) and C16 : 0 (12.03 %). The DNA G+C content of strain L6-8T was 60.4 mol% (T m). nodC and nifH were not amplified in strain L6-8T. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain L6-8T and R. borbori DN316T, R. oryzae Alt505T and R. pseudoryzae J3-A127T was between 11.2 and 18.3 %. Based on the sequence similarity analyses, phenotypic, biochemical and physiological characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization, strain L6-8T could be readily distinguished from its closest relatives and represents a novel species of the genus Rhizobium , for which the name Rhizobium paknamense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L6-8T ( = NBRC 109338T = BCC 55142T).

An aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped and moderately halophilic strain SKP4-6T, was isolated from shrimp paste (Ka-pi) collected from Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain SKP4-6T belonged to the genus Halobacillus and was most closely related to Halobacillus salinus JCM 11546T (98.6 %), Halobacillus locisalis KCTC 3788T (98.6 %) and Halobacillus yeomjeoni KCTC 3957T (98.6 %) based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strain SKP4-6T and its related species were 18.2–19.3 % and 69.84–84.51 %, respectively, which were lower than the threshold recommended for species delineation. The strain grew optimally at 30–40 °C, at pH 7.0 and with 10–15 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained l-Orn–d-Asp in the cell wall peptidoglycan. The DNA G+C content was 44.8 mol%. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. Phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol were present as major polar lipids. Based on this polyphasic approach, digital DNA–DNA relatedness and ANI values, strain SKP4-6T represents a novel species of the genus Halobacillus , for which the name Halobacillus fulvus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SKP4-6T (=JCM 32624T=TISTR 2595T).

A Gram-reaction-positive aerobic actinomycete, designated strain MN08-A0118T, which produced short chains of non-motile spores on the tips of long sporophores and formed yellow–brown colonies with branched substrate mycelium, was studied in detail to determine its taxonomic position. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses, strain MN08-A0118T was grouped into the genus Herbidospora , being most closely related to Streptosporangium claviforme (98.2 %), Herbidospora osyris (98.2 %), Herbidospora daliensis (98.2 %), Herbidospora cretacea (97.9 %) and Herbidospora yilanensis (97.4 %). Chemotaxonomic data supported allocation of the strain to the genus Herbidospora . MK-10(H4) was the predominant menaquinone with minor amounts of MK-10(H6), MK-10(H2) and MK-9(H4); the fatty acid profile contained major amounts of iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 0 10-methyl, iso-C14 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 2-OH; the phospholipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine and glucosamine-containing phospholipids; and the whole-cell sugars included ribose, glucose, galactose, madurose and rhamnose (trace). The phylogenetic data, phenotypic and genotypic properties and DNA–DNA hybridization differentiated this strain from its closely related strains, S. claviforme (35–54 % DNA–DNA relatedness), H. osyris (39–51 %), H. daliensis (3–16 %), H. cretacea (34–39 %) and H. yilanensis (34–42 %). Thus, MN08-A0118T represents a novel species of the genus Herbidospora , for which the name Herbidospora mongoliensis sp. nov. is proposed, with MN08-A0118T ( = NBRC 105882T  = VTCC D9-22T) as the type strain. In addition, DNA–DNA hybridization results showed that S. claviforme and H. osyris are synonyms of H. cretacea .

Two strains (JA643T and JA755) of Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic phototrophic, bacteria capable of growth at low temperatures (10–15 °C) were isolated from freshwater streams from different geographical regions of India. Both strains contain bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spirilloxanthin series. Phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid (PL), unidentified amino lipids (AL1–AL6, AL9) and an unidentified lipid (L1) were the polar lipids present in both strains. The major cellular fatty acid was C18 : 1ω7c (76–79 % of the total). Bacteriohopane derivatives (BHD1,2), unidentified hopanoids (UH1–5), diplopterol (DPL) and diploptene (DPE) were the major hopanoids of both strains. The DNA G+C content was 64.2–64.5 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analysis showed that both strains are closely related to the genus Rhodomicrobium and clustered with Rhodomicrobium vannielii DSM 162T (99 % sequence similarity). However, both strains exhibited only 46.1 % DNA–DNA hybridization with R. vannielii DSM 162T. Strains JA643T and JA755 shared >99 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and were >85 % related on the basis of DNA–DNA hybridization; they are therefore considered to represent a novel species in the genus Rhodomicrobium , for which the name Rhodomicrobium udaipurense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JA643T ( = KCTC 15219T = NBRC 109057T).
