A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium, strain GH9-3T, isolated from greenhouse soil, was investigated in a polyphasic study. The novel organism grew at 10–35 °C, 0–3 % NaCl and pH 5–9. It had ubiquinone 8 (Q-8) as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and possessed C16 : 0, summed feature 3, C17 : 0 cyclo and C18 : 1 ω7c as the major fatty acids (together representing 87.4 % of the total). The DNA G+C content was 67.1 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain GH9-3T showed that it grouped within the Variovorax cluster, with highest sequence similarities to Variovorax paradoxus IAM 12373T (98.3 %) and Variovorax dokdonensis DS-43T (98.0 %). DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain GH9-3T and V. paradoxus DSM 30034T and V. dokdonensis DS-43T were 38 and 29 %, respectively. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic features, it is proposed that strain GH9-3T represents a novel species of the genus Variovorax with the name Variovorax soli sp. nov. The type strain is GH9-3T (=KACC 11579T=DSM 18216T).

A Gram-negative, obligately aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from greenhouse soil used to cultivate lettuce. The strain, GH2-10T, was characterized on the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the isolate belonged to the genus Devosia, with highest sequence similarity (98.5 %) to Devosia riboflavina IFO 13584T. Sequence similarities with other strains tested were below 97.0 %. Strain GH2-10T had Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 59.5 mol%. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization experiments (47 % relatedness between D. riboflavina DSM 7230T and strain GH2-10T) and physiological and biochemical tests suggested that strain GH2-10T represents a novel species of the genus Devosia, for which the name Devosia soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GH2-10T (=KACC 11509T=DSM 17780T).

A novel Gram-negative, motile, bacteriochlorophyll b-containing purple non-sulfur bacterium, strain JA248T, was isolated from phototrophic enrichments of a yellow–green epilithic biofilm sample collected from Gulmarg, India. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain JA248T was 63.8 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain JA248T had highest similarity to members of the genus Blastochloris and was closely related to Blastochloris sulfoviridis DSM 729T (98.5 % sequence similarity) and Blastochloris viridis DSM 133T (98.4 %) of the class Alphaproteobacteria. Strain JA248T was characterized based on polyphasic taxonomy, and distinct phenotypic and molecular differences based on DNA–DNA hybridization (relatedness of <46.5 % with the two species of the genus Blastochloris), multilocus sequence analysis, and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic evidence separated strain JA248T from other species of the genus Blastochloris. Strain JA248T therefore represents a novel species in the genus Blastochloris, for which the name Blastochloris gulmargensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JA248T ( = JCM 14795T  = DSM 19786T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod- and coccus-shaped bacterium, designated strain B6-12T, was isolated from sediment collected from the River Geumho in South Korea. In comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the novel strain appeared to be affiliated with the class Alphaproteobacteria and to be most closely related to Kaistia adipata KCTC 12095T, Kaistia dalseonensis DSM 18800T, Kaistia geumhonensis DSM 18799T, Kaistia granuli KCTC 12575T, Kaistia soli KACC 12605T and Kaistia terrae KACC 12910T, with sequence similarities of 96.2–99.1 %. The predominant ubiquinone in the isolate was Q-10, major fatty acids were C18 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c and C19 : 0ω8c cyclo, and genomic DNA G+C content was 63.0 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic evidence and the results of DNA–DNA hybridizations, strain B6-12T represents a novel species in the genus Kaistia , for which the name Kaistia defluvii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B6-12T ( = KCTC 23766T  = JCM 18034T).

A novel, psychrotolerant, facultative anaerobe, strain FTR1T, was isolated from Pleistocene ice from the permafrost tunnel in Fox, Alaska. Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped cells were observed with sizes 0·6–0·7×0·9–1·5 μm. Growth occurred within the pH range 6·5–9·5 with optimum growth at pH 7·3–7·5. The temperature range for growth of the novel isolate was 0–28 °C and optimum growth occurred at 24 °C. The novel isolate does not require NaCl; growth was observed between 0 and 5 % NaCl with optimum growth at 0·5 % (w/v). The novel isolate was a catalase-negative chemoorganoheterotroph that used as substrates sugars and some products of proteolysis. The metabolic end products were acetate, ethanol and CO2. Strain FTR1T was sensitive to ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, rifampicin, kanamycin and gentamicin. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed 99·8 % similarity between strain FTR1T and Carnobacterium alterfunditum, but DNA–DNA hybridization between them demonstrated 39±1·5 % relatedness. On the basis of genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, it is proposed that strain FTR1T (=ATCC BAA-754T=JCM 12174T=CIP 108033T) be assigned to the novel species Carnobacterium pleistocenium sp. nov.

A novel strain, designated 5GHs31-2T, was isolated from a greenhouse soil sample collected from Yongin city, South Korea. Cells of strain 5GHs31-2T were Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, polar flagellated and yellow-pigmented. The isolate was aerobic, catalase-negative and oxidase-positive and grew optimally at 28–30 °C and pH 7.0. Strain 5GHs31-2T revealed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Fulvimonas soli LMG 19981T (97.6 %), Dyella thiooxydans ATSB10T (97.5 %) and Frateuria terrea VA24T (97.4 %). Furthermore, the neighbour-joining tree showed that strain 5GHs31-2T was a representative of a member of the genus Fulvimonas . Strain 5GHs31-2T contained iso-C16 : 0, summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or C16 : 0 10-methyl), iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 as the major fatty acids, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an aminolipid as the main polar lipids and Q-8 as the predominant quinone. The genomic DNA G+C content of 5GHs31-2T was 73.0 mol%. According to DNA–DNA hybridization experiments, DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain 5GHs31-2T and its closest phylogenetic neighbours were below 70 %. Based on the taxonomic data, strain 5GHs31-2T represents a novel species of the genus Fulvimonas , for which the name Fulvimonas yonginensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 5GHs31-2T ( = KACC 16952T = DSM 28344T).

An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-flagellated, long rod or rod-shaped bacterial strain, 5GH22-11T, was isolated from a soil sample of a greenhouse in Gongju, Republic of Korea. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain 5GH22-11T showed the highest sequence similarities with Niastella populi THYL-44T (97.1 %), Niastella koreensis GR20-10T (95.7 %) and Niastella yeongjuensis GR20-13T (95.6 %), and < 93 % sequence similarity with all other species with validly published names. The phylogenetic tree also showed strain 5GH22-11T formed a compact cluster with members of the genus Niastella. DNA–DNA hybridization revealed strain 5GH22-11T is a novel species, showing far less than 70 % DNA–DNA relatedness with Niastella populi THYL-44T. Strain 5GH22-11T contained iso-C15 : 0 (34.3 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (24.8 %) and iso-C15 : 1 G (18.2 %) as the major fatty acids; phosphatidylethanolamine, six unknown aminolipids, two unknown lipids and one unknown phospholipid as the polar lipids; and MK-7 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content was 41.4 mol%. Based on these phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic data, it was demonstrated that strain 5GH22-11T represents a novel species of the genus Niastella, for which the name Niastella gongjuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 5GH22-11T ( = KACC 17399T = JCM 19941T).

Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicates that two distinct sublineages exist within the genus Alcaligenes: the Alcaligenes faecalis lineage, comprising Alcaligenes aquatilis and A. faecalis (with the three subspecies A. faecalis subsp. faecalis, A. faecalis subsp. parafaecalis and A. faecalis subsp. phenolicus), and the Alcaligenes defragrans lineage, comprising A. defragrans. This phylogenetic discrimination is supported by phenotypic and chemotaxonomic differences. It is proposed that the A. defragrans lineage constitutes a distinct genus, for which the name Castellaniella gen. nov. is proposed. The type strain for Castellaniella defragrans gen. nov., comb. nov. is 54PinT (=CCUG 39790T=CIP 105602T=DSM 12141T). Finally, on the basis of data from the literature and new DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic data, the novel species Castellaniella denitrificans sp. nov. (type strain NKNTAUT=DSM 11046T=CCUG 39541T) is proposed for two strains previously identified as strains of A. defragrans.

An extremely halophilic archaeon, strain Fa-1T, was isolated from a marine solar saltern in Fujian, China. Strain Fa-1T required Mg2+ and at least 2.0 M NaCl for growth. It was able to grow at pH 6.5–9.0 (optimally at pH 7.0–7.5) and at 20–55 °C (optimally at 37–42 °C). The major polar lipids of strain Fa-1T were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester, phosphatidylglycerol sulfate and a sulfated diglycosyl diether. On the basis of a 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain Fa-1T was closely related to nine species of the genus Halorubrum, showing sequence similarities of 97.4–98.4 %. The G+C content of the DNA of strain Fa-1T is 64.9 mol% (T m). DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain Fa-1T and the most closely related members of the genus Halorubrum were below 51 %. On the basis of the data from this study, strain Fa-1T represents a novel species of the genus Halorubrum, for which the name Halorubrum litoreum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Fa-1T (=CGMCC 1.5336T =JCM 13561T).

One bacterial strain, designated 5GH38-5T, which was characterized as aerobic, Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated rods, was isolated from a soil sample from a greenhouse in Sangju region, Republic of Korea. It grew at temperatures of 15–45 °C, pH 5.0–9.0 and NaCl concentrations (w/v) of 0–3.0 %. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed the strain was closely related to Pseudoxanthomonas kaohsiungensis J36T (97.3 %), Pseudoxanthomonas suwonensis 4M1T (96.8 %), Pseudoxanthomonas daejeonensis TR6-08T (96.7 %) and Pseudoxanthomonas kalamensis JA40T (96.7 %). Its major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The predominant ubiquinone was Q-8. The major polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content was 71.1 mol%. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain 5GH38-5T and P. kaohsiungensis J36T was less than 70 %. The combined phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that strain 5GH38-5T could be clearly distinguished from closely related members of the genus Pseudoxanthomonas. Therefore, the results of this study indicated the existence of a novel species of the genus Pseudoxanthomonas, for which we propose the name Pseudoxanthomonas sangjuensis sp. nov., with strain 5GH38-5T ( = KACC 16961T = DSM 28345T = JCM 19948T) as the type strain.

A taxonomic study of a novel marine, heterotrophic, non-gliding, halotolerant and light-pink-pigmented bacterium was carried out using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain KMM 6241T is a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes. Strain KMM 6241T formed a cluster with the genera Algoriphagus, Chimaereicella and Hongiella with sequence similarities of 94.0–98.2 %. Hongiella ornithinivorans was the closest relative of the novel isolate. Comparative analysis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic characteristics of strain KMM 6241T and representatives of the genera Algoriphagus, Chimaereicella and Hongiella revealed many similar features. Consequently, phylogenetic evidence supported by phenotypic and genotypic similarities support the transfer of members of the genera Chimaereicella and Hongiella to the genus Algoriphagus and the establishment of a novel species, Algoriphagus vanfongensis sp. nov., with strain KMM 6241T (=DSM 17529T=KCTC 12716T) as the type strain.
