In this paper we review regularities of low-lying states for many-body systems, in particular, atomic nuclei, under random interactions. We shall discuss the famous problem of spin zero ground state dominance, positive parity dominance, collective motion, odd-even staggering, average energies, etc., in the presence of random interactions.

On the basis of a weak-coupling model, adjustments are made to the interactions used in the full shell model calculations of Millener in order to fit the experimental energies of the low-lying negativeparity levels of 16N and of the low-lying positive-parity levels of 180 and 190 . The predicted energies of the low-lying negative-parity levels of 17N then agree better with experiment, while those for 18N lead to suggested spin assignments for the observed levels.

The spin-orbit splittings of 13 C and 13 N corresponding to the ground state and second 0+ state (Hoyle state) in 12 C are investigated within a 12 C +N model. The agreement of the calculated results with experiments suggests that the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] states around Ex = 9 ~ 10 MeV in 13 C and 13 N can be interpreted as the spin-orbit partner with the [Formula: see text] configuration. We also discuss the positive parity states (including [Formula: see text]) of 13 C and 13 N around the [Formula: see text] threshold, indicating to have the configuration of the Hoyle state in 12 C plus a valence nucleon in sd shell.

Light and heavy pentaquarks are described within a constituent quark model based on a spin-flavor hyperfine interaction. In this model the lowest state acquires positive parity. The masses of the light antidecuplet members are calculated dynamically using a variational method. It is shown that the octet and antidecuplet states with the same quantum numbers mix ideally due to SU (3)F breaking. Masses of the charmed antisextet pentaquarks are predicted within the same model.
