Two experimental techniques have been developed at GANIL using resonant elastic and inelastic scattering reactions in inverse kinematics. These techniques were used to study the structure of unstable nuclei. A brief description of the methods is presented through two examples of application in astrophysics. Moreover, new ideas and simple questions are put forward: what happens in the low energy tail of unbound nuclei ground state resonances?

Abstract Two low-lying unbound states in 16C are firstly investigated by the deuteron inelastic scattering in inverse kinematics. Besides the 2- state at 5.45-MeV previously measured in a 1n knockout reaction, a new resonant state at 6.89 MeV is observed for the first time. The inelastic scattering angular distributions of these two states are well reproduced by the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculation with an l = 1 excitation. In addition, the spin-parities of the unbound states are discussed and tentatively assigned based on the shell model calculations using the modified YSOX interaction.

Proton inelastic scattering on the neutron-rich nucleus 32 Mg has been experimentally studied at E lab = 46.5 MeV / nucleon in inverse kinematics. The energies of excited states in 32 Mg were obtained by measuring de-excitation γ rays. Several new states were identified by γ-γ coincidence analysis. Their spins and parities were restricted and the deformation parameters βp,p′ were extracted from the measured angular distribution of the proton inelastic scattering. The present analysis favors 4+ for the spin and parity of the 2321-keV state.
