The elastic diffuse neutron scattering of an NbC0.73 single-crystal has been measured at room temperature on two different spectrometers, the four-circle D10 at the HFR–ILL (Grenoble), and the two-axis G44 with time-of-flight analysis at the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin (Saclay). The data were treated either by Fourier transformations or by least-squares fit. The short-range-order parameters and the interatomic static displacements obtained by the various experiments and/or data treatment are in good agreement: carbon vacancies tend to be third neighbours in the f.c.c. metalloid sublattice and metal atoms relax away from the vacancy first neighbours by ~0.05 Å. It is shown that the treatment of diffuse scattering data limited to two reciprocal planes [(001) and (1{\bar 1}0)] gives satisfactory results.

ABSTRACTDiffuse neutron scattering experiments have been performed on a single crystal Fe0.8Al0.2at T-1013K. The data are analysed in terms of short-range order and lattice displacements. Effective pair-interactions have been determined by the inverse Monte Carlo method.Further measurements of the temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering reveal a long-range ordered phase with the B32 structure below T∼ 650K. This new phase is related to the influence of the magnetism on the chemical ordering in the, iron-aluminum alloys.

Magnetic neutron scattering data from dilute PtCo, PtFe and PdMn alloys have been analyzed taking into account the presence of critical neutron scattering in these alloys. The unpolarized neutron scattering data shows forward peaks at low K values indicating large magnetization clouds and the presence of critical scattering. The effects of atomic short range order (ASRO) were also included in the analysis of the PtCo alloy. The calculations were made using a magnetic environment model and Monte Carlo simulation methods.

ABSTRACTIn Al-Cu alloys containing Guinier-Preston zones, the scattering contributions due to short-range order and atomic displacements vary differently when the scattering contrast between Al and Cu is changed. The diffuse neutron scattering of Al-Cu single crystals containing 63Cu or 65Cu is compared and evaluated to test the current methods of separating the two scattering contributions. - The nature of a sugggtted ordered state in α-brass is also studied by neutron scattering, using Cu to enhance the scattering contrast in a Cu-30 at.% Zn alloy. A broad diffuse peak is found in powdered, appropriately aged samples, confirming that the first Warren-Cowley short-range order parameter is negative.
