Significance Idai-related flooding and destruction has damaged crucial regional infrastructure and put more than 350,000 lives at risk. The catastrophe comes amid attempts by the ruling FRELIMO party to stifle rising internal dissent, contain the fallout from a debt scandal and ensure gas investments proceed in the restive northern Cabo Delgado province. Impacts Rising costs for agricultural and mining investments in central and northern Mozambique will dampen broader growth and investment. The rehabilitation of key infrastructure in opposition-dominated central regions will become increasingly politicised. The fallout from Idai will affect preparations for the October general election, raising fears of a potential poll delay. The disaster response may delay the government's debt-related legal proceedings in the United Kingdom against Credit Suisse and Privinvest.

We report nine travellers with confirmed chikungunya virus infection, returning from tourist areas of Thailand to Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Romania, Israel and France, diagnosed in January and February 2019. These sentinel tourists support the intensification of chikungunya virus circulation in Thailand and highlight the potential for importation to areas at risk of local transmission.

Upon arrival in the United Kingdom (UK), asylum claimants undergo a complex application process with no guarantee of being granted leave to remain. Throughout this process, applicants live in ‘limbo’ with no certainty regarding their future. They are forced into poverty, are at risk of destitution and often live in substandard accommodation, all of which causes further harm, compounding the circumstances from which they have fled. This paper explores the stress and vulnerability faced by male asylum seekers during the application process and how they cope or resist vulnerability during this time. Based on narrative interviews, this research finds that the most stressful experiences for participants include living in ‘limbo’ throughout the asylum application process and beyond. As such, many coped by using distraction techniques, seeking support and through cognitive restructuring.
