The study deals with an automation of chamfering by a material-handling robot with considering of accuracy and costs. The study focused on automation of chamfering without influence of individual dimensional error of workpiece. A casted impeller usually chamfered with handwork is treated in the study as an example of a workpiece having individual dimensional error. In the system, a file driven by air reciprocating actuator is used as a chamfering tool and image processing technology is used to compensate the dimensional error of the workpiece. The robot hand carries a workpiece instead of a chamfering tool both for chamfering and for material handling. From the experimental result, the system is found effective to chamfer a workpiece having dimensional error automatically.

Genetics research often relies on experiments that require repetitive, time-consuming handling of small volumes of liquid (1 mL) and biomass (10–20 μL) such as fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH), β-galactosidase staining, immunohisto chemistry, skeletal and tunel assays. Often manual, these experiments are time intensive and error-prone. We report on the design, fabrication, and testing of a low-cost, two-axis, precision robot for FISH assays on whole mice embryos. The robot can complete 20 successive embryo immersions in unique isothermal solutions in minutes for 6 samples. Repeatability of the orthogonal axes is 66 and 214 μm, near the measurement uncertainty limit and sufficient for operation. Accuracy is achieved by systematic error compensation. Low-cost and precision are obtained using design and manufacturing techniques and processes, resulting in a cost of 15% of comparable instruments (e.g., InsituStain, Intavis Bioanalytical Instruments). This design demonstrates a simple, automated platform to perform a typically manual experimental genetics technique.

An error compensation method for the single pair-pole encoder has been discussed in this paper. This article analyzed offset, sensitivity error, quadrature error and ferromagnetic interference error of single-pole magnetic encoder to obtain the expression of each error. In order to facilitate error compensation, the common expression for describing the error has been summed up. The process for formatting the error can be assumed as the process of changing from circle to ellipse. Therefore the inverse of this process is the same as the process of error compensation. The experimental results show that the accuracy of magnetic encoder which used this method could reach ±1, thus the error compensation effect is obvious. The magnetic encoder which applied this method has the advantages of low-cost, high-precision and convenient to use.

Error compensation is an effective and inexpensive way that can further enhance the machining accuracy of a multi-axis machine tool. The volumetric error measurement method is an essential of the error compensation method. The measurement of volumetric errors of a 5-axis machine tool is very difficult to be conducted due to its complexity. In this study, a volumetric-error measurement method using telescoping ball-bar was developed for the three major types of 5-axis machines. With the use of the three derived error models and the two-step measurement procedures, the method can quickly determine the volumetric errors of the three types of 5-axis machine tools. Comparing to the measurement methods currently used in industry, the proposed method provides the advantages of low cost, easy setup, and high efficiency.
