Recently, there have been significant technological approaches for the bulk power grid. The customer demand is associated with conventional grid coupled large central generating stations through a high voltage transmission to a distribution system. Urban transmission systems are consistently progressing to meet the increasing needs for power and to replace old-pattern generation with native renewable generation and power provisions from outward green energy resources. Power grid is undergoing remarkable modernization towards advanced consistency, greater efficiency, and less cost by the incorporation of renewable energy and developed control technology. Quick developing nature of grid, consumer needs, and industrial invention situates substation modernization at the leading of grid transformation. Smart grid is essential to accomplish all the fastest technological reformations occurring in generation, transmission and distribution (T&D) of electric power, with growing application of sensors, computers and communications. In this study the recent trend and application of electric power grid is briefly enunciated.

Automation of power generation and its control process is inevitable trend and requirement. In construction of smart grid, clean energy is a significant indicator of smart grid, and energy conservation and emission reduction is a major research task. Automatic control technology in power generation especially in energy conservation and emission reduction is briefly introduced in the paper. In power plant, there are some problems to solve in desulphurization and water feeding, and the application of automatic control technology could solve or improve the problems in some degree.

In this paper, the application status of diesel generator set and the purpose and advantages and disadvantages of its parallel operation are summarized in brief. Grid connected operation of multi diesel generator are analyzed mainly. The necessary conditions of grid connected operation, the safety and special protect environment of grid operation, as well as the foreign and domestic development status of grid connected control technology are presented. Finally the development direction of grid diesel generator is pointed out, and the concept of smart grid is proposed.
