During the last decade, most organizations have implemented enterprise-wide applications and integration platforms. These implementations have delivered benefits in terms of data synchronization and information flows within the organization, and with trading partners providing valuable inputs for planning and optimization of schedules and reporting. The best and the most important technology of these technologies is RFID or Radio Frequency Identification systems. RFID is one of the most promising and the most advanced technologies released in recent years. Perishable and short life products, especially foodstuffs, are those cases causing the largest problems and challenges for supply chain management. These challenges are mainly due to the variety in the number of products, special needs for tracing and tracking the product flow during the supply chain, the short life of the products, the requirement for controlling the temperature in the supply chain and the high volume of the products we deal with.  Using the RFID system is one of the best potential solutions helping the supply chain management solve logistic problems of spoilable products. In food industries, the period of the product storage is short due to the high probability that the product spoils and the short time of the storage of the final product. Today, the changes in the ways of producing, distributing, maintaining and selling foodstuffs have caused changes in consumers' demands to increase the quality and the durability of foodstuff packages. Innovations are created in this industry to make sure of the desirable performance of packing in the supply chain of the foodstuffs, such as active or intelligent packing methods. Purpose The purpose of this paper is the need to build a novel approach that would allow flexible modeling and solving of food supply chain management (FSCM) problems. The models developed would use the data (data-driven modeling) as early as possible at the modeling phase, which would lead to a better and more realistic representation of the problems being modeled. Design/methodology/approach An essential feature of the presented approach is its declarativeness. The use of a declarative approach that additionally includes constraint satisfaction problems and provides an opportunity of fast and easy modeling of constrains different in type and character. Implementation of the proposed approach was performed with the use of an original hybrid method in which constraint logic programming (CLP) and mathematical programming (MP) are integrated and transformation of a model is used as a presolving technique. Findings The proposed constraint-driven approach has proved to be extremely flexible and efficient. The findings obtained during part of experiments dedicated to efficiency were very interesting. The use of the constraint-driven approach has enabled finding a solution depending on the instance data up to 1,000 times faster than using the MP. Research limitations/implications Due to the limited use of exact methods for NP-hard problems, the future study should be to integrate the CLP with environments other than the MP. It is also possible, e.g., with metaheuristics like genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, etc. Practical implications There is a possibility of using the approach as a basis to build a decision support system for FSCM, simple integration with databases, enterprise resource planning systems, management information systems, etc. Originality/value The new constraint-driven approach to FSCM has been proposed. The proposed approach is an extension of the hybrid approach. Also, a new decision-making model of distribution and logistics for the food supply chain is built. A presolving technique for this model has been presented.

The demand of food is increasing day by day, innovative agricultural practices and sustainable food supply chain management (SFSCM) has gained an emergent importance. Food industries across the globe mainly focus on the manufacturing of their own products to achieve sustainability. The importance of sustainable food supply chain management is to overcome the wastage in food manufacturing industries. In the present research, we identified eleven challenges in the SFSCM on the basis of literature review and expert opinion. The approach is an integration of fuzzy with DEMATEL which can be used for dividing the challenges into cause and effect group. Fuzzy DEMATEL method has continuously been used for the analysis of challenges and is the novel approach for decision making. Thus, this method can be implemented in many fields including automobiles, food industries, retail market etc. From the fuzzy DEMATEL results, it can be confirmed that the Safety and Security is one of the most influencing challenge and has the strongest association with other challenges.

Supply chain management (SCM) has been well-known to strongly influence the company performance.  in food manufacturing industries. In this study quality, time, information, flexibility, and integration have been selected as variables to predict their influence on Kuwait food industries. The methodology of the study was developed where five hypotheses have been proposed on the relationship among the selected factors and the performance. To evaluate the hypotheses, an examination through a questionnaire was conducted, followed by its analysis with Statistics Packaging for Social Science (SPSS) and Minitab applications. The findings were found to be in support of two hypotheses only. Oher three hypotheses were rejected. This study showed the ways in which order the factors should be prioritized to improve the performance of an organization.

Although research on sustainable procurement is increasing, little empirical research has been done on how sustainable procurement is established between companies. Therefore, drawing on supply chain management and purchasing management literature, this study explores how food industries manage sustainable supplier relationships. Through the identification of company clusters with typical sustainable procurement approaches, the paper contributes to the supply chain management literature. A questionnaire is applied to gather data amongst Dutch Food and Beverage companies from which 62 could be used for the analyses (effective response rate 28.9%). Cluster analysis revealed four types of companies with distinctive sustainable procurement relationships: market relationships (arms-length), sustainability leader, one-sided sustainability (interested supplier but less interested buyer), and inconclusive sustainability (buyer and suppliers only made a start). As the implementation of sustainable procurement remains low in practice, insights from this study are important for managers.
